DAY TWENTY-FIVE: a letter to someone you judged by their first impression
DAY TWENTY-SIX: favorite books
I really am just pushing 25 in here to get it out of the way. Stupid topic for me. I've judged all sorts of folks by first impressions. It's part of what I do in my work, aside from being a survival skill I developed from moving around a lot as a kid. I size people up all the time. So I have no letter to write to anyone in particular on that account. I have judged kindly, harshly, mistakenly and otherwise. I've lived with the consequences of both the confirmations and errors of my judgments about people. I still do.
Favorite books is a topic that makes me sad because I simply don't have the time to read that I would want to anymore. It's such a treat to have the time to sit in a quiet corner and read. I'll be able to do more of it after October. To choose a favorite book is almost impossible, but I have current favorites that I'm reading as I can sneak in a few minutes here and there. I read more than one at a time and am constantly having to backtrack and re-read. On my Kindle rotation now are El Narco by Ioan Grillo, Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by David Simon, The Mother-in-Law by my friend Veena Venugopal, Rita Moreno: A Memoir, and I'm also reading the Oz stories from my childhood again--I love them so!
I have paper books stashed around the house that I read in fits and starts as well. These make me very happy because they are mostly gifts from my dearest
quuf or volumes that I've treasured for years. I love history books and big oversized books filled with photographs of people from other times/places. I have books for poetry and short stories. My dear husband just built some amazing shelves in my new office room here at the house so I have places for them now. He finished them today, so they are now waiting to be filled with all sorts of goodness!
