I didn't really think this would be all that interesting to anyone else. I'm happy to be proven wrong. :)
I must have been either sixteen or seventeen at the time, can't remember exactly. The only place I could use internet at the time was the local library. And the only time I could do that was when I got off school at two (instead of four) and didn't take the first bus home (the only ones were at two, three and four, missed those and you were out of luck) and went to the library instead, or sometimes I asked mom or dad to pick me up from the library on their way home from work if they could (but that had to be set up beforehand, because no cellphones at the time). Oh, and of course if there was a free computer at the library, and of course the allotted time was fifteen minutes, but if there wasn't anyone else around the librarians didn't mind me using it for longer (most of them knew me pretty well, since I'd always spent lots of time in the library whenever I could. I liked being around books).
At some point before I turned eighteen we did manage to get a dial-up connection at home, but you paid according to bandwith use and it was expensive so there was never time to poke around and discover things. Just know what you want, go look up some fic and then read them offline. Eh... or print them out and read them in class the next day. :P
I once spent the entire day at the library in front of a computer, I went in when they openend the doors and when I left they locked the doors behind me. :D Free day!! But yeah, it was... interesting sometimes to try and read at the library, I kept feeling like someone was bound to be standing behind me everytime there was smut, to make it worse some of the stories had art with them...
