One of my best friends suggested that I watch this show that she absolutely loved, Supernatural. When she described it, I at first was leery; two brothers traveling across the country hunting monsters and demons and trying to find their father. I am not a fan of scary movies or shows. I turned her down. A few months later she suggested the same show again. She wanted someone to watch it so she could talk about it with someone. I finally gave in; she was my friend and we had similar tastes. I took the first season dvd and went home. [Read more...]
I watched the Pilot episode and was not thrilled but I decided I would continue to watch. Wendigo, the second episode was terrible. I really was not enjoying the show and decided to give the show one more try before I gave up. Sadly, Dead in the Water was the next episode. I returned the dvds and said I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t find anything to keep my interest.
My friend continued to watch the show and would mention it every now and again, usually saying how much she thought I would enjoy it. During the summer, when there wasn’t much to watch on tv, I decided to give it another try.
One my second watch, I started from the Pilot again. I was again, not blown away. I watched a few more episodes, but then came to Skin. Grossed me out to no end! The piles of skin and goo. I was finished for the second time.
During this time, I was on Livejournal and a big fan of Stargate Atlantis. I loved the series and would read fanfiction for it all the time. On fanfiction.net, I kept seeing how many fics there were on the site for Supernatural. Also, several people who I followed kept mentioning the show and praising how good it was. I figured I would give the show one last chance. I talked with my friend about it and decided that no matter how much I disliked it, I would watch the entire first season; all 22 episodes.
I borrowed the dvds again. I began, for the third time, with the Pilot. I got to Hook Man, and for the first time, enjoyed an episode. Bugs was next and to this day is in my bottom five episodes of the series. Home was next and from that point on, I was hooked. Something about the way the story really delved into the story of the death of the mother was compelling. The stand alone stories that didn’t have much to do with the beginning mythology of the show were interesting.
The way the season ended had me glued to my screen and screaming with the final scene of the season. I immediately called my friend telling her that I could not believe that was the ending. I was very happy that I had not started watching the show from the beginning or watched the show as it aired so I did not have to wait months for the resolution at the beginning of the second season. She laughed and told me I could borrow the second season. I immediately started watching the second season.
I should probably point out that in the Supernatural timeline, I began my watching during the summer break between seasons six and seven. I should also mention that I was still working 40 hours a week at this time.
I watched the first six seasons of Supernatural within 2 months. I could not get enough! I finished as the third episode of season 7 was airing. The show is my favorite on tv!
This show makes its viewers feel so many different emotions, often in the same episode. One minute you are laughing, the next your heart is being stomped on and you are crying. While not every episode is fantastic, there does seem to be a small bit of information that a viewer needs to fully understand and enjoy the overall story arcs. I love that in season five, there are recalls to season one. Very little is ever forgotten or unimportant.
I work 2nd shift and do not get home until around 12:30am. I miss the live airing of the show but thanks to my dvr, I am able to watch new episodes as soon as I get home. Supernatural is the first show on my list of dvr timers. Starting in season nine, I started “twitter stalking” the episodes. I search for a hashtag and read what everyone, who is lucky enough to watch the episode as it airs, is talking about. I don’t mind spoilers and actually think “twitter stalking” helps me notice things I may have missed when watching the show.
During the hiatus between seasons seven and eight, I purchased all the Supernatural novels that were available at the time. I could not get enough. Fan fiction was a life savior. I love episode tags, especially if they are hurt/comfort…and even more so if they are Sam centered. The comic books are quite good.
My love of Supernatural has led me to watch other shows, especially during the summer break between seasons seven and eight. I watched all seven season of Gilmore Girls thanks to my love of Jared Padalecki. I know he is only in the first five seasons, but I was invested and had to know how it ended. When that was done, I still had time to kill so because of Jensen Ackles, I watched Dark Angel and Smallville. I loved both!!! Watching Smallville actually led to my love of Arrow…and Stephen Amell (but that is a story for another time).
I have nothing against Dean, but I find myself drawn to the character of Sam Winchester. When Castiel came along, I found him fun, but he was not Sam.
The week before the premiere of season ten, I listed my favorite episodes from each season on my Facebook. I thought perhaps I would do something similar on my Livejournal but elaborate a little more. I tried to make a list of my top 10 episodes but I found it much too hard. There are so many episodes that I love. As of my writing this, Supernatural has aired 197 episodes. That is amazing!!!
I do think I have an absolute favorite episode and least favorite episode. Least favorite would be Bloodlines from season nine. My favorite would be Sacrifice, season eight’s finale.
I am sure my friends get sick of my talking about my favorite show, but it is so wonderful and I think everyone should be watching this show! Thanks to TNT, no one has an excuse to not to watch. Thanks to working second shift, I get to watch three episodes weekday mornings. I own the dvds of each season but love watching repeats on tv.
The music is fantastic in this show! I even have a playlist on my ipod that includes the instrumental soundtrack as well as classic songs in the show. The Official Companions were a big help identifying which songs were in the episodes from the first six seasons. Carry On My Wayward Son to Heat of the Moment to My Heart Will Go On. So much fun!!! My ringtone on my phone is even Carry On My Wayward Son!
I recently got a few shirts from teefury.com. I adore that website; there are so many wonderful geeky shirts on the site. I am now the proud owner of three shirts that are Supernatural related. A sweatshirt from another site is a permanent fixture in my wardrobe. I am proud to be a fan of the show and gladly let people know.
My love of the show has recently been included in my first tattoo. I have the anti-possession charm incorporated into the art.
Supernatural, Supernatural, Supernatural!!! Thank you for the wonderful shows and stories and fun!!!
