Our nontraditional Valentine's Day celebration meant taking an extra-long hawking break in the middle of the day. I was hoping to scare up some rabbits in this new field, as it is pretty big and fairly close to our usual rabbit spot. We never did find a bunny, but Pele had as good a time as ever chasing sparrows. She seemed a little unenthusiastic today - she's probably kind of sore from yesterday. So sparrows were a nice easy target for her and a good way to relax.
Caught the first sparrow in her usual fashion, by flying it down and grabbing it when it hit the grass.
Young Cooper's hawks are a pretty perfect example of cryptic coloration.
She caught the other one in midair not far from me. I love seeing that kind of flight. She reached out and grabbed it with both feet and then landed in the grass. A redtail pair were circling over the field, and she kept looking over her shoulder at them to make sure they weren't going to come down and try to eat her.
This is Pele's cute face. This is how you know she is truly content.
The business end.
