that's very nice, but the fact that this was turned into a news story supports my idea. what purpose does that story serve other than to make americans feel better about themselves?

and why exactly is that a bad purpose?

because it's misdirecting concern we should still have for the mess'o'potamia (to borrow from the daily show).

so we should disreguard the tsunami tragedy and focus on tragedies we already have? do we dish out concern on a first come first served basis?

We didn't cause this tragedy.

(actually, I think the Jews did, with their weather machines)

that is entirely beside the point. we didnt cause a great many things that are still clearly tragic and clearly worthy of concern and empathy.

But how is the tsunami disaster our concern? Some argue that richer countries have a responsibility to the poorer countries. I don't know if I agree with that. We have plenty of problems in our own country; we don't need to throw $300 million at the tsunami. And where the hell is this money coming from? Part of it is from the $13000 I paid in federal taxes, I suppose.

With all the problems that the U.S. cause, I become more and more of an isolationist every day. I know that's not a realistic ideal (at least at this time) but it would seem to cause less problems.

your entire point of contention is based on a "we-didnt-do-it-so-we-dont-care" sort of viewpoint. which is ridiculous in and of itself. we didnt gas a few million jews in germany but it still warranted (and warrants) concern. if a family member of a close friend dies do we use this same technique? "i didnt stab grandma ethel so, man im sorry but i just cant care."

a country is nothing if not a collection of people. a mass collection of people who should as a sole entity show the same sort of respect and yes - concern - that an individual would.

try not to forget that this was also a heavily touristic area. should countries (not just exclusively the u.s.) care more or less because they lost some of their own?

it is futile to argue matters of what, one would hope, are basic human kindnesses with someone who is so clearly hiptastically cynical.

Are you suggesting that we fought World War II to prevent the gassing of Jews? The United States didn't have concern for the Jews, we just lucked out and stopped it from continuing. If we were truly concerned, we wouldn't have prevented Jews from emigrating and would've entered the war sooner ( ... )

it is clearly none of your business or concern what i personally have done to help. just as it is none of mine what you have or have not. it is also clearly a pointless discussion which can only disintegrate into a petty arguement which will prove no one right or wrong and only serve to enhance already inflated egos and self-assuredness.

i do not know you. i dont care to know you or to justify what i have donated or otherwise done to help. i am quite sure you can continue having a thrilling discussion as to why bleeding-hearts suck with daniel. do have a lovely day.

Whatever. I love it when internet arguments devolve into one person condescending to the other.

I don't even know why I personally argue on the internet. You (and most people on the internet) are obviously close-minded and your views cannot be changed by my feeble words.

I don't think bleeding hearts necessarily suck. I just wish they'd mix their care with a little bit of logic.

You don't care to know me? Well that just hurts. Maybe you would if I lived halfway across the ocean and was impaled by driftwood.

Ok, I'm done.

P.S. You need to lighten up. I don't know you, but from my limited exposure you seem to take things way too seriously. It is hard to read tone through an internet posting though.

who made the assumption that we can only be concerned for one global event at once?
well. i guess that was me. because it seems that most people really are that single-minded and easily distracted.
so i suppose what i'm doing is lamenting that fact.

Perhaps they should instead eat a fruit cup? Maybe a few sit-ups?
