I open my browser this morning to NPR's homepage, and what greets me?
A DAY OF DOOM.
Look at that. Let's go from top left and clockwise around. The Ayatollah Khamenei has now voiced support for the false election results of Ahmadinejad and told protestors to go home. Next, it looks as if the health care overhaul bill will come in at around one TRILLION dollars. I literally gasped. Then, Gen. McChrystal (real name??) says that the next EIGHTEEN MONTHS of the war in Afghanistan are "critical." This makes me wonder -- if we're looking at 18 months as short-term, exactly how long is the long-term? I do not want my grandchildren to be fighting a war in Afghanistan! Also, isn't every month of a war critical? Does any general ever say, "No, chaps, let's just take this month off, shall we? Relax. Go spend some time with your families. These ruffians will still be here come the first of next month -- it's really not a critical situation." NO! Then, in the lower right, you see a tidbit about banking reform. It's not necessarily bad news, but I (and probably everyone else) have News PTSD when it comes to the words "banks" and "banking." For a while there, I was turning the radio off anytime something about banks aired. And finally, in the lower left, the little puff story about flowers advertises itself as "'WICKED PLANTS' CREEP THROUGH BROOKLYN." Great. Now the plants are coming after us. Is nothing sacred? Is nothing safe??
