Less than two hours before the state of Georgia would have killed Troy Davis by lethal injection, the US Supreme Court has issued a stay of execution until Sept. 29, when it will decide whether to hear Davis's appeal.
Atlanta Journal-Constitution story. It's the least that could have been done. Now the entire matter depends upon the US Supreme Court. I've been updating about the Troy Davis case for a couple of weeks now, and, so far, I've seen very little response from you guys about this. This execution is now (even more of) a national matter. I keep posting about this in order to help raise awareness. I believe in a government that acts on the behalf of its people. If you are American, I implore you to do something to voice that you do not want the state of Georgia to kill Troy Davis.
Now, I'm not asking you to get out on the street and start marching and chanting, although, if you want to do that, then good. I'm not even asking you to write a letter or sign a petition. What I think would be great is if you would start a conversation about this matter with others. Talk to people. If you're like me, you're probably glad for something to talk about, anyway. Talk with your parents, your roommates, your friends, your classmates, your coworkers. Ask if they've heard about this, and if they haven't, fill them in. Feel free to point them to
GFADP (Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty),
Amnesty International, or any article that discusses the execution.
I would have never become interested in the Troy Davis case without friends mentioning it to me. But their casual (not preachy) conversation gave me the opportunity to add my voice to the outcry against this execution.
