Konatsu at the 07-Ghost Wiki Personality: Konatsu is not the most skilled, experienced, or talented of the Black Hakws. By far, he's the least remarkable of all of them, except in how remarkably plain and remarkably out of place he is -- he is someone that cannot use Wars or even Zaiphon yet he is a member of a group that specializes in such.
And yet, as far as Konatsu is concerned that's just fine. He's not doing what he is for the sake of fame or recognition. In his mind, he exists to serve; he's trained all his life to be able to protect Ayanami and has achieved a position where doing so is not only possible, but is actually his job. He fulfills his duty as Hyuuga's Begleiter diligently, as well, despite the many, many, many headaches he receives in the process of doing so. He'll carefully complete any paperwork that's dumped on him, and even when he yells at Hyuuga to do it himself Konatsu tends to be less concerned for himself and more for Hyuuga.
Put simply, Konatsu is just about the best subordinate one could hope for. He's obedient without sacrificing his intelligence, ambitious enough to benefit his superiors without getting in their way and, above all else, loyal. I would be a stretch to say that everything Konatsu does is in service to the Black Hawks and Ayanami, but it's a close thing. He has ambitions of his own but most of those he thinks about in terms of far-future plans. Konatsu watches after himself, but he would be lying if he said that wasn't mostly because his death would be inconveniencing and worse for Hyuuga.
Konatsu approaches everything in life with a very serious state of mind. There's no (or at least very little) joking around or playing games in Konatsu's life. He's very duty-minded and considers his job as a member of the Black Hawks is absolute, 100% most important priority. However, Konatsu isn't 100% serious and blank-faced all of the time. There are very rare moments where Konatsu can be seen playing along with the antics of his companions, and more common moments where he loses his cool. After being 'adopted' as Shuri's older brother he had one of these moments -- Shuri combined with Hyuuga's usual lazy behavior combined with being told that he would be training the twins from there on... It was enough to send Konatsu into a frenzy of frustrated anger and force Hyuuga to pick up the teenager and dangle him until he calmed down.
It's moments like these that prove that, as much as Konatsu wishes otherwise, he's fairly high strung. Relaxing isn't just something he doesn't often do, it's something that's very hard for him to do. He doesn't take his position for granted, and every day he just as hard to prove he deserves it as he did to earn it. This state of mind is a sharp contrast to that of Hyuuga, Konatsu's brilliant, skilled, and lazy direct superior. It's a source of frequent frustration for Konatsu, who frequently gets tasked with completing Hyuuga's paperwork. He does it, and he doesn't try to shirk his duty, but complaints about Hyuuga's lack of dedication to the menial but vital parts of his job are frequent.
Fortunately, Konatsu is very polite, as well as being keenly aware of rank and station. He always addresses those around him properly and formerly. This extends to respect for the dead as well. Konatsu doesn't revel in bloodshed and feel no joy in ending the lives of enemies, and is quick to scold someone that reacts to death gleefully.
Strengths: In canon, Konatsu could not used either Wars or Zaphion -- the two forms of what serves as magic in 07-Ghosts canon. While this is still to his disadvantage in the long run, it will give him a very slight advantage over other 07-Ghost characters that have just arrived at Luceti -- they'll be functioning at half power, whereas he'll be relatively unaffected in comparison.
His primary and most prominent strength is his talent with swordplay. Konatsu was at the top of his class in a fairly prestigious military academy, and despite his inability to use Wars or Zaiphon he could have become an instructor. He's shown to be both fast and powerful, capable of handling himself against many enemies at once.
Weaknesses: Konatsu is small. Though still an accomplished swordsman, his height and weight work against him often. Not only is he easier to knock over, shove around, or generally manhandle, but his reach isn't as long as most. Against most people his skill makes this no problem at all, but if he ever comes up against someone near, at, or above his level his stature going to become a severe disadvantage.
Konatsu's very determined personality can and has gotten him into trouble before. Quite simply, he doesn't know when to quit, and it's almost gotten him killed in the past. It extends even to the point that he'll continue trying to act on his last decided course of action even while knocked out -- such as grabbing Hyuuga by the throat even has being beaten into submission. It's easy to imagine how this could get him in trouble with individuals that won't be amused by the incident like Hyuuga was.
Konatsu can also be rather reckless -- not for his own sake, but for other. He doesn't put himself into danger for no reason, but his reasons can seem quite silly, like the time he threw himself out of an airship and into the middle of a heated battle to protect Shuri... because Shuri's death could have damaged Hyuuga's reputation.
Samples
First Person: 1. What's your opinion of the law? Does it make the lives of everyday people better or worse? Established laws are a critical part of any society. They're put in place to protect the residents of a city or country that may not have enough power to protect themselves. If a citizen opts to follow these laws, they're lives will be improved greatly. The ones that opt to disobey the laws will surely claim they're detrimental to the quality of one's life.
2. Do you care about other people, or would you rather not deal with them? The answer isn't a simple black and white one. People, as a group, are generally not worth dealing with -- because they're a pack, a collection individuals that are, even if only for as long as they're a member of said pack, without their own identity.
However, the individual persons that make up a group can be worth all the time in the world. Even so... my tolerance for most individuals is more limited than it should be.
3. Describe a weakness of yours and how you might overcome it. My greatest weakness is my inability to use Wars or Zaiphon. There's no way to simply 'overcome' this -- I can only try to compensate for my lack by improving my talents in other areas.
4. Has there ever been a time in your life when you questioned your motives or morals? If so, what was it? I've never questioned my motives or morals. Aside from once questioning if the goal I'd decided on could even be achieved. It's a low point in my life that I prefer to not dwell on.
5. Who or what has influenced most of your life decisions? Ayanami-sama and the Black Hawks, unquestionably. My duty and desire to protect Ayanami-sama as a member of the Black Hawks has driven me through most of my life.
... I suppose, following that logic, that my grandfather would also occupy this position. He's the one that first told me of the existence of Ayanami-sama and the Black Hawk.
Third Person: The pain Konatsu was feeling was unlike anything he'd ever before. Not necessarily the worst, but intense in how strange it was. He blinked, slowly, and took a moment to try to understand his surroundings. He was under a tree, he could tell, and it was immediately surrounded by several other trees, though in his position of staring directly up at the sky he wasn't sure if he was in a small orchard or a full forest or something in between.
If Konatsu was anyone else he might have simply laid there feeling dazed for a while, counting the leaves. Instead, he made himself move after just a few moment, and though it produced a faint but steady ache, moving was still possible -- meaning it was, for the time being, good enough for Konatsu. As he forced himself to sit up and observe his surroundings properly he felt something soft brush against his shoulder, and immediately turned his head to catch sight of it.
The fight of a blue-black feathery thing looming in his peripheral vision was enough to kick Konatsu's instincts into gear. Something had managed to creep up close enough to touch him without him noticing -- it had to be dangerous, or at the very least no benevolent. Without thinking about it he twisted around and reached out to grab hold of whatever it was, intending to get some answers.
A single yank, a few seconds, and a searing jolt of pain later Konatsu sincerely regretted his actions. A strangled gasp with just a little voice to it tore its way from the teenager's throat, but he was in too much pain to even notice. Trying in choked gasps of air Konatsu leaned forward and huddled in on himself, shuddering violently as a wave of nausea and dizziness washed over him. He was vaguely aware of unfamiliar muscles in his back stretching, the wings that he couldn't properly see fanning out in response to the pain.
He also aware, vaguely, of the now crushed and crumpled dark blue feather still clutched in his hand. He had no idea what it meant, but he was getting a strong impression that in his hand was not where it belonged.
