Horsey

Rather than bemoaning the obscene amount of money spent by Australians on a single annual horse race (something like $2 billion) I am just going to revel in the glory that is Makybe Diva. She has now won 3 Melbourne Cups in a row (never done before), and has become our new national icon (surpassing even the greatness of Phar Lap, whose preserved hide lives in a Victorian Museum, and whose heart, yup, HEART lives in the National Museum of Australia - we treasure our heroes in rather odd ways). YOU GO GIRL!!

The Cup is so important to Australians, fuck knows why, but the old adage is correct: it's the race that stops a nation. Seriously, businesses close for the afternoon. Those that stay open gather in front of the TV on the first Tuesday in November at 2:10pm to watch 24 horses race around a 3,200m course - which is exactly what we did, patients be damned. People stop suddenly in the street when the race begins to listen to their radios or watch TV's in a shop window. It's a HUGE deal here. So here's something you'll probably never see in my LJ again, but today it is fitting: A PICTURE OF A HORSEY.:x:x:x
