”I’m so bored,” Hayato said after 5 minutes of hiding out in the alley behind the game centre.
Ryu didn’t answer from his hunched position by the corner, keeping watch.
“Ne,” Hayato said and watched Ryu shift his eyes a fraction and then with a click of his tongue move his attention right back to the empty street he was watching.
“Nee,” Hayato persisted. “We can’t stay here all night.”
“Why? Are you getting cold?”
“Don’t be silly,” Hayato scoffed and then gave an involuntary shiver, something that caused the edge of Ryu’s lip to twitch despite the fact that he still wasn’t looking at Hayato.
“Shut up,” Hayato muttered and tucked his arms around himself sulkily while sitting down against the wall next to Ryu.
“We would have gotten away easier splitting up,” Ryu said and leaned back against the wall with a sigh, his shoulder almost touching Hayato’s.
“No,” Hayato said with a determined narrowing of his eyes. “We’re not doing that again.”
Ryu shifted his weight but kept quiet, his hands in his pockets one leg outstretched in front of him.
“Can’t we-” Hayato started after what felt like an eternity.
“Just five more minutes,” Ryu interrupted him. “Then we can leave.”
Another moment of silence before Hayato suddenly said “Hey, is your dad still being a prick?”
Ryu shrugged. “More or less.”
“You know,” Hayato said and then seemed to hesitate, scratched his neck. “You know you can always like, stay at my place if it gets bad.”
Ryu turned to look at him with a little frown. “He doesn’t hit me Hayato.”
“I know that!” Hayato said and turned slightly pink in the dim light from a distant streetlight. “I just thought if you like, wanted to get away or something, or- Just- Just forget about it, alright?” He turned away partly embarrassed and partly indignant.
Ryu watched him stare stubbornly into the distance for a while. Then he said “Thanks,” and “I knew that.”
Hayato nodded jerkily and fiddled with the ring on his pinkie.
"Let's go," Ryu said as he stood up.
