It’s Dai-chan’s first day of school and Jin is sort of sobbing.
“Ok-kay, let’s go into your- classroom,” Jin breaks down, clutching Dai close to him. “Y-your father would be so proud of you right n-now...”
“Yes, Uncle Jinjin...” Dai gently pries Jin’s arm away from him and tugs him into the room, immediately darting over to a group of boys already playing with the building blocks.
A hand materializes in front of him with a tissue, which Jin gratefully accepts.
“Same old Akanishi,” an amused voice says.
Jin blows his nose and blinks the tears away to peer at the man in front of him.
“Eh? Kamenashi?” Jin blinks in wonder at the man. “You became a teacher?”
Kamenashi just raises his eyebrows and Jin flushes, feeling awkward. Duh. It’s like high school all over again, before Jin dropped out to have more time to work and earn money for his family. Kamenashi was always the smart one in their circle of friends, reading and clicking his tongue disapprovingly at their wild schemes. Even back then, his gaze always unnerved Jin, who sensed that something else was behind the look but could never quite figure out what it was.
“You have a son?” Kamenashi asks, nodding towards where Dai was playing.
Jin thinks carefully about his answer. “Dai is my family, but he’s not my son,” he says firmly, and leaves it at that. “So, how have you been?”
Kamenashi tilts his head at Jin’s answer. The stare Jin remembers is even more intense now, and when Kamenashi smiles slowly, Jin has to suppress a shiver.
“Better now,” is the reply Jin gets, and he flushes a little at the implication. “We should catch up sometime, have coffee and talk; you can bring Dai to my place, I have plenty of toys.” Kamenashi took out a pen from his shirt pocket (always neat and immaculate, Jin marveled, even now) and took Jin’s hand in his to scribble his phone number. Jin tries to concentrate on the pen inking onto his skin versus the fingers that grasp his hand that may or may not be stroking the inside of his wrist. It could just be the sadly sex-starved side of Jin’s brain that is sensing that, but Kamenashi lingers a little before pulling back.
“Call me, okay?” He smiles again, slow and almost - promising, and Jin just nods dumbly. As Kamenashi walks away to gently pry the glue from some kid’s mouth, Jin turns to leave for work, and it’s not until he gets to his beat-up car that he realizes he forgot to give Dai his lunch.
--
That night Jin tucks Dai-chan into his bed after a long, rambling bedtime story about astronauts and alien soccer players that tired Dai out from giggling. He goes into his room and lies on the bed, staring up at the back of his hand where neat, precise numbers are slightly smudged.
Jin writes down the number on a piece of paper on the nightstand and tells himself that it’s way too late to call Kamenashi anyway, even though it’s only six. Jin promptly falls asleep with his clothes still on, worn out from a day of careful work with worrying about Kamenashi’s phone number smudging.
--
The next morning Kamenashi is herding children around while wearing tight, dark pants and a fitted black blazer. Jin looks down at his own outfit, a worn-out t-shirt and faded jeans, plaid flannel shirt tied sloppily around his waist. Oh, well. Dai’s education and stuff was more important than looking fashionable anyway.
“Bye, Uncle Jinjin!” Dai yells when he scampers off to play, and Jin winces as Kamenashi looks up at the noise.
Jin is suddenly paralyzed with nervousness when he sees that Kamenashi is nearing him. He blurts out, “Late for work, gonna be, gotta go,” and speeds out of there, not stopping until he reaches his car and yanks the door open so that he can jump in.
While he’s on the road, he bonks his head against the steering wheel and says, “Stupid, stupid, stupid,” while swerving to avoid hitting the car in front of him. But what’s really looping around in his head is coward, coward, coward.

Kamenashi always looks good, Jin marvels the following day as he admires the man talking seriously with another parent. He’s watching safely right now as Kamenashi is distracted
While Jin’s unaware, a short, blonde-haired child creeps up to Jin, staring up at him.
When Jin realizes there’s a short thing standing next to him, he shrieks in shock and jumps.
The child doesn’t blink.
“Um, can I...help you-” Jin starts, getting seriously worried, but the kid interrupts him and says, “You look too dumb to like sensei.”
Jin thinks about all the crappy part-time jobs he has to work because he never finished his schooling in comparison to Kamenashi’s crisp clothes and gentle, firm manner around the children he teaches and doesn’t disagree. He doesn’t disagree with the second part of the kid’s sentence, either. He just laughs and says, “Yeah, pretty much. But you’re gonna grow up smart like your Kamenashi-sensei, ne?” Jin ruffles the boy’s hair and his grin widens when he smiles a little before running off to play with Dai.
When Jin waves goodbye to Dai and is about to go, he glances over and catches Kamenashi staring at him, only it is different again, and Jin just smiles a little in greeting before he makes his escape. For the rest of the day, Jin thinks about Kamenashi’s dark eyes and the scrap of paper with numbers that sits next to his bed.
--
The Monday after Dai’s first week of school Jin is horribly, horribly late because his boss gave him a stern lecture about being late to work so often. He apologized as sincerely and quickly as possible and then sprinted to his car, whipping out his cellphone and finally dialing the numbers he already knew by heart.
Kamenashi picks up on the first ring.
“I’m so so so sorry, my work held me back, I should have called ahead, is Dai okay? I’m so sorry,” Jin rushes out, and he feels a now-familiar prick of tears coming on.
“Calm down, Akanishi,” Kamenashi says, and Jin does calm down, a little, at the familiar voice of reason. “Dai’s fine. He’s at my house, playing with my neighbors in the front yard.” Jin blurts out a million thank you’s in a row and Kamenashi interrupts him with a laugh and directions to his house.
“I’ll see you soon,” Kamenashi says before he hangs up.
Jin gulps as he puts down his cell phone, his hands tightening around the wheel. He’s not sure he’s ready for this, but he doesn’t have a choice, does he? It’s his own fault anyway.
He goes twenty over the speed limit and miraculously isn’t pulled over, fortunately or unfortunately, Jin isn’t quite sure. When Jin nears Kamenashi’s house and spots Dai playing in the front yard, the rush of relief hits so hard that he leaps out of the car and swoops Dai up, hugging him close in happiness.
Dai kicks his little heels in the air in protest, reluctantly holding onto Jin’s neck for a moment before he demands to be put down. “Silly Uncle,” he shouts and grins.
Jin laughs back, giddy, and echoes Dai, “Silly Uncle, yeah.” He smiles and says hi to Dai’s new friends. After he shows them how to play a game of soccer for a few minutes with one of the neighborhood children’s ball, he feels a hand curling around his arm and nearly dies of a heart attack.

As soon as they step inside and Kamenashi closes the door, he turns towards Jin.
“Um...” Jin takes a step backwards, growing more and more anxious as Kamenashi moves closer. “Thank you for...taking care of Dai...” he continues slowly, backing away with every move Kamenashi makes.
“No problem,” Kamenashi replies pleasantly, and easily tips Jin over the arm of the couch with a small push.
“Uh-” Jin exhales heavily, not sure if he’s about to protest or encourage the other man, who is crawling steadily up Jin’s body. “Kamenashi-”
“Call me Kame,” he orders, and Jin blinks slowly, not even surprised anymore that he finds Kamenashi - Kame - disturbingly hot while authoritative.
Kame starts unbuttoning Jin’s shirt and Jin just flails, not helping at all. “Kame, Kame...you...”
“I...?” Kame looks amused as he bends down and deliberately drags his tongue against Jin’s skin. “You have been avoiding me,” he murmurs against Jin’s chest, suddenly pushing their hips together. “What do I have to do to get you to notice me? Blackmail you by threatening to call child protection services?”
Jin struggles a little now and bites his lip as Kame’s hands wander. “You- wouldn’t do that...”
“No, I wouldn’t,” Kame agrees. “But I won’t have to.” His smirk widens at Jin’s whimper, and Jin has the split second to think that he’s in for it, now, before all thought processes flee quickly when Kame’s mouth covers his.
The next few minutes - hour? - feels like a blur, but by the end Jin’s shirt is completely unbuttoned and pushed off his shoulders, Kame’s hands are buried in Jin’s hair while they kiss, and Jin’s legs have wrapped themselves around Kame totally without his consent or knowledge.

“Coming, Dai-kun,” Kame calls out. His gaze slides back to Jin, who is sitting up and looks like an absolute mess, he’s sure, red bits of skin and hair akimbo. But the way Kame looks at him makes Jin want to pull Kame back into him and stay on the couch all day.
Kame pulls Jin to his feet, and Jin stumbles into him a little. Kame steadies him, smooths his hair back into place, buttons his shirt up, and kisses Jin until he has to go through the former process all over again.
When Jin and Dai are safely packed away in Jin’s car to go home, Kame leans in through the driver’s window, says, “See you tomorrow,” and kisses Jin just. like. that. Jin is torn between feeling breathless and having another heart attack.
The neighborhood kids make kissy noises and go “ewwwwwwwww,” giggling, while Dai yells, “OH MY GOD, ARE WE GOING TO MOVE IN WITH SENSEI?!” Kame just smirks and steps back, waving goodbye.
Jin waves back, dazed, and narrowly avoids hitting a fire hydrant.
