Jin has saved Kame's life three times, losing two of his own in the process. He has died in two instances Jin knows of, two instances where he lives on without Jin's interference.
He is down to two lives, himself. Decades ago, the powerful Christopher Chant was known to have kept one of his own lives safe by turning it into a ring and giving it to his wife for safekeeping. Jin no longer has the luxury of doing the same.
He has already lost his home.
*
Kame does not die in another existence. Jin watches over him as he strolls through the same festival as in the other worlds. But this time Kame is far away from the water, his hand clutched within a stranger's own. Another man who seems to love him.
*
When you call the Chrestomanci's name out loud it will cause him to appear.
Jin is in his bed, losing one of his countless battles with insomnia. Despite the castle's size and remoteness, people are still around during daylight, after all. Promising young wizards learning their lessons, old friends who come around barely masking their intentions of looking anxiously after him. At night though, the silence is deafening.
The next thing he knows he is standing in the middle of an apartment, a small living room the looks well lived-in but incredibly tidy. It has an uncanny familiarity to it, like a place he would live in if he was another person.
Then he sees him.
Kame, from a world where he doesn't know of Jin or his love. If he was half the noble person the laws of the land says he should be, he would leave this world in an instant without looking back. The Kame of this universe is one whose life he has already saved; there is no need for further interference.
But Kame is looking at him with a pale, frightened face, whispering his name in the way Jin thought he has forgotten.
Jin allows himself to be selfish. He crosses the length of the room hands already reaching for Kame as he does so. Kame surprises him by moving to meet him. The kiss is like the antidote for every poisonous day Jin has lived through.
*
The lines on Kame's palms is different from the one he knows. Jin traces them with his lips as Kame looks on, strangely calm and composed.
"Why do you keep wasting your life to save me?" Kame asks him when he finishes confessing everything, the two of them in bed. Naked in more ways that has to do with clothing.
Jin tells him. "It's a mistake to not know you. In any life."
And it's true.
