Jin spends three nights in a row pretending to be asleep while Kame gasps and jerks awake, covered with a clammy sheen of sweat that Jin can feel through his tank top, Jin's chest pressed against Kame's back, the sounds of his breaths echoing loudly in the small space.
It's not that Jin wants Kame to feel bad about it all on his own. Sometimes it's hard to not reach out and stop him when Kame leaves and Jin's sort of surprised Kame hasn't noticed already. Hasn't called him on his loud snores. Jin's always been a bad actor.
It's just that Jin wouldn't know how to begin. It's hard coming up with something soothing to say about the topic at hand. Jin could try but he's pretty sure Kame wouldn't believe him if Jin just took his hand one day and said, "Kame. I'm fine with dying. Really, it's no biggie."
And maybe Jin's not exactly fine with it. Maybe it's just that what Jin truly believes is that there's nothing that Kame can't do in the Matrix. He's seen it so many times now, there's no limit to it. The first time Kame grabbed hold of Jin and plummeted both of their bodies up in the sky, Jin hadn't exactly been ready for it but afterwards, staring at Kame, wide-eyed and trying to think with Ryo snapping in his ear that Fuck that messed with the coding, could they give him a warning next time? Jin had felt everything around him shift as he realised that it was true, the Matrix revolved around Kame. Not the other way around.
The only one who doesn't seem convinced is Kame himself. It's like he knows he's the One but he doesn't believe it. He doesn't believe that he's invincible. He doesn't think he can save Jin.
Jin does though.
Going in after Kame, after realising they've lost Hina's crew, Ryo almost refusing to connect him at first, Jin doesn't really think about saving the world and stuff. He doesn't even think about dying. Much.
And right before the motorcycle goes through the railing, the second after Jin feels everything materialise around his body, Jin is still convinced that whatever mess he's about to put himself in, Kame'll fix it in the end.

Shirota's too smooth to show his surprise when Kame accepts their invitation to go clubbing, but Moriuchi and Meisa both stare openly at Kame. Kame thinks he should have been offended at their surprise but the truth is that Kame is mostly just trying to figure out what clubbing involves other than deafening music and slutty dancing. He hasn't gotten drunk since university. He wants to be in front of his computer now writing code to hack into the American IRS databases, not walking out on the streets where he could get mugged by hooligans.
Later Kame remembers the whole night in neon and chrome. Out at night, three in the morning, smoke and too-loud basslines clinging to him, on him, in him. This total stranger comes walking straight up to him in one of the clubs they go to, and even though it's so dark and smoky in the room that Kame can't see anything other than the bare outlines of all the other people at the party talking about nothing at all, it's like there's something that made the guy just know Kame would be there that night. Like this is destiny.
"Hey, Kame," says the guy, smooth and even, looks Kame straight in the eye and there's so much faith there that Kame can't look away. "I've been waiting for you."

I remember how we mocked the idea of Kame the hacker, like... was it last month? No, idk. But now it seems so logical, lakjdgn, awkward Kame who just wants to sit at home and not have to like socialise with people when he can just send them an IM, adjlgf or hack into their computer. alkdjgfn or maybe that's just because it's you.
