Notes: I wrote this last summer, before S3 started.
“Stop it!” His eyes were full of question marks when he looked at her angry face. “What?” he asked. “Your leg.” Quinn’s head pointed to his leg that was nervously twitching. “Oh, sorry.” They were sitting on a park bench under the clear sky that encircled them like the top of a perfectly blue tent. “What time is it?” “Two minutes after you asked me the last time.” Quinn’s voice sounded annoyed, but it wasn’t Puck’s asking that brought that specific shade into her words, it was a try to cover up her own nervousness. “So?” “2:13,” Quinn rolled her eyes. “Stop asking me all the time.” Puck ignored her and started to bite his nails, his eyes searching the park for the one thing he thought he had lost forever.
The former couple had set a date with Shelby to meet their daughter, two days ago. None of them had sleept that night and the night after that, which led to too many coups of coffee which led to the nervous tweak of several parts of Puck’s body. He wouldn’t stop biting his nails or hitting his foot against the leg of the bench, but Quinn didn’t mind as much as she claimed she did. In fact she was more than touched when she saw him waiting for her infront of her house when she left to go to the park. None of them had said a word during their walk; Puck’s permanent asks about the time were the only conversations they had since they had arrived. Puck’s nervousness reflected to the outside but as nervous as Quinn was, too, she wouldn’t let anyone see it.
“She quit! I knew it! I knew she would quit! That freaking bit-” Puck was on his feet, yelling. “Would you stop? She said she would come and she will come. And now sit down again!” His mistrust against Shelby got bigger and bigger ever since Quinn had told him she wanted them to meet Beth. Why would she do that? Shelby was her mother now… Quinn’s stare went back to the entrance of the park and Puck did as he was told. After a couple heartbeats of silence his lips opened again, his chest in desperate need for air. “Quinn?” he said. She didn’t answer but he knew he had her attention since she was sitting right next to him. “What do you think did she tell her? I mean, about us? What is she even supposed to call us? I mean, you’re her mom and I’m her dad but-” “She’s one, she doesn’t even understand anything anyone will tell her. Besides, I’m not her.. mom. And you’re not her dad. Not anymore. Shelby is. And whatever she wants us to be, we’ll be it.” Quinn could hear his painfilled swallow. “There,” Quinn wispered, her eyes sparkling like the night sky on a winter’s night. Puck’s head flipped around immediatly, his eyes searching again. And then he saw her. He saw her little feet taking their tiny steps on the grass. Her green eyes were filled with pride, her lips wore a smile with every step she took. Her brown hair was long enough to fall on her shoulders and her little light dress left her enough room to take as big steps as her small legs would allow her. Shelby was walking behind her, her loving eyes never leaving the precious baby girl infront of her. When she looked up, just for a second, she met Quinn’s eyes and gave her an encouraging smile. Quinn didn’t smile back.
Shelby took the little girl and walked towards them. “She is beautiful,” Puck heard himself say. His head turned into Quinn’s direction, meeting her silence. “She has your eyes.” Hers were still sparkling, but he could see now that it were tears she had to fight. “And your hair,” she wispered, her voice trembling.
When Shelby came closer, they could see the little girl a little better. Shelby had took her in her arms and carried her now. She had a soother in her mouth and her hands were playing with her mother’s hair while her vivid green eyes were examining every inch of the park. “Hi,” Shelby quickly waved with her free hand, now standing right next to Puck and Quinn. None of the two could speak. “Well… maybe we should have a seat,” Shelby suggested. She walked infront of the other two and then sat down on the grass. The toddler loved getting her feet on the ground again, which made her squeal in excitement. Puck, who had followed Shelby not letting Beth out of his sight just for a split second, didn’t notice that Quinn still was standing by the bench, not able to move. When he carefully sat down, right across Shelby, the little girl turned her head towards him. Her eyes didn’t met his, they were directed somewhere above them, filled with curiosity. “Your hair,” Shelby pointed on his mohawk. “Oh,” Puck said, a little smile on his face. His hand automatically went to his hair, stroking it. “You wanna touch?” he asked the little girl. When her eyes went down to look into his, Puck’s heart skipped a beat. He saw how her tiny hand reached for his hair and when he lowered his head she took her small steps to get closer to the stranger infront of her. Nobody said a word until she finally reached him and her little palm touched the black streak on his head. Touching it made her laugh so loud, Puck’s heart felt like there was no room for sadness inside of it anymore. He laughed along with her and when he noticed Quinn’s absence, his head turned into the direction they used to sit just minutes ago just to find her still standing next to the white park bench. He saw the fear in her eyes, but also the desire. Looking back, he doesn’t know if it was his smile that made her move her feet or the endless happiness in Beth’s laugh that was reaching every single part of the park, but whatever it was, he was glad she came closer, finally. When Beth was done stroking Puck’s hair, she went back to her mother’s arms, while Quinn sat down next to Puck. Her eyes still looked tremulous, the glint never leaving them. Shelby noticed Quinn’s hestistation and turned Beth into the direction of the other two in the circle. “Beth, look baby, that’s uncle Noah over there.” Uncle. A silent twitch ran through Puck’s stomach, but he still managed smiling and waving at the toddler. Beth smiled back, her mouth half covered of the soother. “And that’s aunty Quinn. Say hiiii,” Shelby waved with Beth’s tiny arm. Quinn looked at Beth, every inch of her body was trembling. Shelby let Beth’s feet touch the ground again, but this time she led her in Quinn’s direction. The little girl started to walk, step by step she got closer to the blonde woman infront of her and when she almost reached her, she stumbled slightly so that Quinn’s arms reached for her to catch her, her eyes in fear for the little girl. When Beth looked up, she laughed her happy laugh again and Quinn helped her to get on her feet again, a relieved smile on her lips. She looked into the same green eyes herself had inherited from her own mother. Beth’s hands finally reached for Quinn and she took her to sit down on her lap. A single tear ran down her cheek and when Beth looked up to her, her hand reached for it. Quinn looked at her just the way a mother could. Nothing else mattered anymore. There were only her daughter and herself. The look they shared felt like hours, hours of happiness, hours of peace. But it were only seconds that passed by; so much quicker than she wished they had. Puck’s head turned to Shelby, his smile as huge as his lips ever formed them in his life before. He caught her checking her watch; his brows furrowed instandly. “When do you… when do you two have to leave again?” “Actually, I told Rachel I would meet her at three at the cafe.” “What time is it?” he asked, once again. “2:45,” Quinn said, her voice hard. Shelby looked at her, Beth sitting in her lap. “You know, I would really like to talk to Rachel in private. There are some things I need to tell her and I really don’t think she wants to hear a crying baby while we talk,” Shelby smiled at Quinn. Her brows rose, Puck’s eyes were still confused. “You mean?” Quinn said. “You two really would do me such a great favour, if you could look after this little angel just for an hour, or two.” “Of-of course, sure,” Quinn said and even Puck understood Shelby’s offer now. “Uh, yeah totally. No problem at all.” “Great,” Shelby said. “Then I’ll meet you at 4, right here.” “We’ll be here,” Quinn said, her eyes saying thank you.
