RTD versus the Moff and fandom
I think one of the more charming differences between the RTD era and The Eleventh Hour is how "hardcore fans" are treated. RTD openly sneered at fans in interviews; in the show, fan characters were stereotypical social outcasts and mostly came to sticky ends.
But in The Eleventh Hour, Amy is a new kind of hardcore fan. She makes Doctor Who dolls, draws cartoons, even does cosplay. Doctor Who was the obsession of her youth. She is a bit eccentric; but also vivacious, beautiful and sexy. She resembles modern fandom far more than RTD's outcasts.
Amy gets to experience a fan's fondest wish: travelling with the doctor.
This is the charm of TEH: it's a love letter to fandom. The Moff proves that you can write a story that appeals to the general public AND the fans, without patronizing either.
