So, I am leaving for my trip around Japan tomorrow and have discovered that my planning skills are made out of death doom and destruction. stupid americans with their stupid jock/cheerleader cool-kids obsessions leaking into hollywood, music and pop culture (bright americans aren't implicated in this btw).

they hate geek because geek doesn't recognise their cool, and cool without recognition is nothing. thus cool and its acolytes have to try to make geek think it's inferior to cool, try to define themselves as not-geek, because cool can only survive as a value on a scale. but geek can just be geek, regardless of cool.

I just somehow expected that to be an attitude mainly held my (uneducated) teenagers who feel that they have something to prove - not by people with a social science degree or someone who writes advice books for parents... I had hoped that people would grow out of that stage :-S

You must remember those people are writing the books not because they believe it, but because they know there are lots of insecure teenagers who will pay money to be told how they can be cool. Bastards.

ps. don't worry about travelling alone. you backpacking? you'll meet good people. don't freak out - remember you don't have to stick to really strict schedules, you can travel at your own pace xxx

I'll try. It is simply the first time that I have actually travelled for a longer period of time all on my own in a country where I don't speak the language well. I am semi expecting to love it, once I am checked into the youth hostel and thinking out my plan for the day with a good cup of tea in my hand...

Oh and so far the book hasn't been translated, as it is by German authors. I will have a read though and if it is as good as it sounds, I'll keep my eyes peeled for a translation (it sounds like one of those books that screams for a translation). ^_^

So a bit like calling someone black? If you are black yourself, it is okay, but if you are any other skin tone - you have a "discrimination suit" against you before you finished talking?
