V is for Vignettes Under Calico Skies

Yesterday evening, I picked out a fic for every letter that I have left on my bingo card. Many of the fics are on the shorter side. I want to be sure to get this round of bingo finished by the end of the year, and I've been chewing through fics more slowly lately than I do sometimes. Among the shorter fics on my list, the ones I read tonight were the three shortest. It was that sort of evening.

The first was Till a Bullet Stopped His Song by Callisto. I actually read this story during the last bingo round, after fiorenza_a recommended it in the comments of one of my bingo posts. I had already filled the T square by that point, but the fic was so good that I wanted to be able to include it on my card, so I saved it to read again during this round. It was just as good on rereading. The fic doesn't have a great deal of plot; most of the important events have already happened before it begins. It is beautifully written, though, and delivers a lot of emotion without broad dramatic strokes. 1,100 words. B/D slash. Particularly recommended.

I also read Grapes Without Pips by hutchynstarsk. This fic is a tag to the episode Man Without a Past. It is basically hurt/comfort, but with some complications. It was a pleasant read, but not a stand-out. 3,106 words. Gen.

Vignettes Under Calico Skies by danajeanne is, as the name suggests, a series of vignettes. They span the time from Bodie and Doyle's first meeting to their old age. This fic had both good points and bad. I enjoyed the last vignette featuring much older Lads. The others were all right, but at times felt a little too mushy. They also implied that Bodie's love for Doyle happened more or less at first sight. The whole notion of love at first sight just annoys me, and it seems unnecessary in a Pros story when you have all this time available for the relationship to develop as well as a strong friendship for it to develop out of. That's one of the things I like about Pros slash fic, really: there is a believable basis for the relationship. Anyway, I didn't like the love at first sight element of the fic. 3,593 words. B/D slash.
