This is something that has been widely discussed on the internet for some time, but I never contributed to (much of) any of it until now.
Poll On the topic of Steve Carell My love for The Office has waned considerably, but Michael Scott is still one of my favorites and the thought of Steve Carell leaving The Office saddens me perhaps a little more than it has any right to. I mean, Michael Scott. What can I say - I love him. He isn't bright and he isn't high on the social graces, but he tries so hard and he's got such unexpected moments of sweetness and even ingenuity. There's just so much passion in his character, for everything he does, that I truly believe when people say he is the heart of the show. To see it linger on without him? I don't know. Honestly I'm picturing NBC performing open heart surgery and it isn't pretty.
I want to see whatever it is that crawls or drags itself off the table, though, so I'mma continue watching, at least for awhile, in hopes that it's at least somewhat funny to me. And when I say funny, I mean that I hope to crack up because it's humorous, not because it's horribly mutilated and I have to cover up my disgust with bouts of awkward laughter.
The show won't be the same. I don't expect it would be, and if the writers are smart they won't try to replace Michael Scott with another Michael Scott-ish character, but what I mean is this: the character that made me fall in love with the show is leaving, and he'll be taking a bit of my heart in the process. It won't be the same, and I'll miss seeing him on my television every week.
