They had no idea Charlie would take that figure of speech to heart. If one's not making the other's life a living hell, then they're having a knock-down, drag-out fight-and that's only the beginning. But whether they like it or not, they're family, and they're a lot more alike than they realize.

She was there in his final moments as a soldier in World War Two, sat by his bedside after the accident-and now, she offers brief glimpses into the man he used to be. In Charlie's eyes, she isn't just another silver-haired lady; she's a heroine and an equal, and when push comes to shove he'll protect her with a ferocity usually not seen from the otherwise mild-mannered Charlie. Most of the time, though, he's content to just clean out her gutters, work on her car, and do some heavy lifting for her when her hip goes out.

He avoids it for a myriad of reasons: He's too old for her, he's handicapped, and she's way out of his league, but above all he realizes that she doesn't need a boyfriend right now. Instead, he hopes the feelings will eventually pass and in the meanwhile provides Jess the only thing he knows to offer: stability, whether that entails faithfully waking up at 2 AM every night to walk Jessica home from work, or otherwise going through ridiculous lengths for her.
