Girl Scout cookies? Well, someone at the office will eat them if I don't. A box of the mint ones and a box of Samoas, please?

You're lucky - I don't have any coworkers to push these off on. I bet you'll be pretty popular. But yeah, sure thing.

By the way, don't think we've met. Charlie Toussaint.

I hope so. And Girl Scout cookies are pretty good. Not like those knock-off vanilla sandwiches I saw at the Food Emporium yesterday.

I'm Miles Brennan. I've been an infrequent presence on the Compendiums, but I haven't actually visited much. I just moved to town.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I tried some chocolate shortbread from the grocery a while back and you'd think there wouldn't be much of a difference, but it's not the same.

I recognize that last name. Hotels? Well that makes sense. Living on the Pen or off?

It's really not. I don't mind the generic brand most of the time, but some things just aren't the same. Water? Is always water. Generic Coca-Cola? Usually disgusting. Maybe it's generic sweets in general?

Off. I'm in the West Village.

That might be the case. Or maybe the Girl Scouts secretly sprinkle their cookies with crack.

Same here - I don't blame you, really. The Pen's a constant source of insanity. You're the one that's been tracking the flying monkeys, right?

It sounds like it. I've only been there a few times over the years and it seemed calm enough, but then, I didn't stay for long. Maybe you have to spend more than a few hours there if you want to catch the insanity.

Of course, recently, even the Compendiums have been pretty insane.

Tell me about it. I remember the good old days when Tales used to carry out their petty feuds face-to-face. The whole Compendium thing seems a little passive-aggressive.

This is my first reincarnation, so I really only have my story and this life to go on. Was it more face-to-face in the past?

Arguing by Compendium does seem a little passive-aggressive, though. And there certainly seems to be a lot of arguing going on nowadays.

To be completely honest, I can't remember using the Compendiums a lot during my previous incarnations, but it seems like things were a great deal simpler back then. The more time passes, the more Tales change, I guess. Some of us, anyway.

Yeah, I think so. I guess when the rest of the world has resorted to text messaging as a viable way of communication without actually communicating, we've resorted to compendiums.

So there's serious evolution in the way Tales... I don't know how to say this. The way they are? "Manifest" makes it sound like we're possessed.

Yeah, I hate text messaging. I'd rather just make the phone call. It's easier and faster for me than typing everything out. I can see how the Compendium's our equivalent, though. Quick. Impersonal. Can use it at a distance from the people you're talking to.

Yeah, you could say that, but it varies from tale to tale. Some of us are nothing like we used to be, and others don't change much at all despite countless reincarnations. It's not an exact science.

I mean, it's nice, I guess. The compendiums keep us together, but there's tales I've talked to through this thing that I have never actually met. It's kind of sad.
