When learning about remote access services in Microsoft classes I get frustrated with the way things are where I work. The venue is boring, the music is lame. Drinks are overpriced and lousy and don't even get me started on the food. The Todd doesn't seem to get the importance of having a good, solid remote access system for our company, as he's ok with the way things are run now.
I would really prefer that the system worked the way that we advertize. People sometimes can't get in, despite their name being on the list...if the bouncer can't find the list then they really don't have any options. People who do get in are often disappointed with what they get. I don't have any idea what The Todd is working on, but it doesn't seem like he really cares about the system that's in. I mean, it's like having a nightclub where the walls aren't finished and The Todd seems to be up in his office planning something else already.
I'd love to take over and get it fixed up to be better and sturdier...but I almost feel like I would have to start over because I don't know what he's done. It doesn't feel finished. Argh.
I guess this just brings me back to needing to work on server and network documentation. I like being able to provide good documentation, because I feel like I'm good at it, but blargh if it isn't the most boring thing to do under the sun. I guess I am frustrated with more than one thing at work right now, and a lot of it is with leadership. As things stand now, we really don't have a direction or a vision for where the company's IT is going...I want to change that but there are a lot of hurdles, one of which being these classes. Like the one I'm in right now.
CHAP - Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol. Basically sends a string of data that hashes your password and then sends that hash back to your server and un-hashes it on the inside against your password to make sure that the password itself doesn't ever get sent outside the network. Sounds like a great idea, but the data string is sent in clear text. So if someone can nab that data they can un-hash your password using reverse-engineering programs. Now the bad guy has your password.
That's the kind of thing that I'm learning. What's that? You think it's boring? Wow, small world. : ) Still, this is what I've gotta know to really do my job. This is what I gotta know to get promoted and then maybe I'll be taken seriously. Maybe...

Went out to Oba! last night...such good food and the drinks were amazing. More on this later; my pager just went off.
