I turned 45 yesterday. Given the average life expectancy in my family I’ve either reached or passed the mid-point of my life. That’s both a heartening and depressing thought.

Heartening because I’ve had an awful lot of fun in those 45 years, depressing for the obvious reasons.

Had some friends over yesterday and got a little snockered - which was nice (I make a nasty Mojito). The back’s a little sore today for no obvious reason.

C goes off to school in a week and a half. I’m very happy for her but am a little bummed too. I could easily go all Alfred J Prufrock and maudlin if I let myself - so I won’t.

I’m listing some of the fun things I’ve done over the last 45 years, in no particular order, to cheer myself up:

• Gotten to ‘do’ many of the things I used to pretend to do as a child like:
- Fly a plane
- Ski
- Surf
- ‘swordfight’ ie fence
- shoot a gun
- SCUBA
- Sail a boat
- Drive a car
- Drive a motorcycle
• I’ve made love to some extraordinary women
• Married one I loved
• Had & raised children
• Traveled to many of the places I’ve wanted to see
• Acted on stage
• Sung to an audience and gotten applause
• Owned a home
• Sank a long putt to win a golf tournament for our team (my very own Rudy moment)
• Taught a dog to do tricks
• Coached my kid’s softball team
• Found a job I liked
