However, vaccine patents are being hoarded by private pharmaceutical companies (Bloomberg Law)
India and South Africa asked the WTO for a TRIPS waiver to waive vaccine patents to allow fast, global production of vaccines. (Al Jazeera)
This proposal has been supported by more than 100 countries. (BBC)
The eight countries refusing this are USA, UK, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Norway and Switzerland, along with the EU. (CNBC)
Vaccine manufacturing companies are lobbying governments intensively to prevent the TRIPS waiver (The Intercept).
These companies are worried that saving people from death will eat into their profits. (Financial Times)
Organisations and former leaders across the world have demanded a free, equitable, global People's Vaccine. (People's Vaccine Alliance)
People in the United States can contact their representatives, to demand that they support a WTO TRIPS Waiver. Resources and scripts here.
