Remember when we despaired over
that interview Zhu Yilong gave, where the subtitles said he'd do "more Bourgeois Tragedies"? The original Hanzi is unreadable under the hardsubs in that interview, but I have since found it. It is this: 正剧 I found it on the
jjwcx page for Zhen Hun (the Guardian novel). Both the vid subber and the Pinyin Popup dictionary plugin translate it as "Bourgeois Tragedy".
But: Zhen Hun is classified under that same category, and that gave me pause. The novel is definitely not a tragedy.
So I dug a little deeper, and lo and behold: these are the categories on jjwcx, where Zhen Hun was published (translations are mine):
悲剧 - Tragedy
正剧 - Drama
轻松 - Light Reading
爆笑 - Comedy
暗黑 - Dark (???)
I don't really know how to translate that last category. Something darker than tragedy? Oi.
In any case, basically what Zhu Yilong must have said, then, was that he'd do more dramas. As opposed to comedy or romance, I guess? That doesn't sound so bad? Took me only half a year to figure out. Don't we all love Chinese? *sigh*
