The best fics I have read this past month - 2 Timeless OT3, 2 B99, 1 Teen Wolf

May 19, 2018 12:50

My second monthly fic rec post! So far I feel motivated to do this - let me know if you like it, please? I didn't get a single comment on my last post, but that is not deterring me yet.

The last month was very stressful for me, and it led to a lot of icons but not as much fic reading as I would have liked. My main fannish disappointment was Timeless - the season started out okay-ish but turned into a total mess very quickly. So I have been looking for fic to fix it. The problem is that they pretty much destroyed Wyatt's character this season, so I really didn't want to read any of the lovey-dovey fic this fandom keeps churning out. Neither am I a Garcia/Lucy fan, especially since the show has been pushing it a bit this season - probably as an attempt to rile up the Lyatt shippers. I don't really know how it happened, but apparently the only way out of my dilemma was to go for the threesome fic. They call it Trash Fire OT3 for a reason. ;D

Of course, there is not all that much of it, but there is one very prolific author, and she writes it so well!

Her fic has been my lifeline this month, especially the wip for which she keeps faithfully posting a new chapter (almost) every day. I've been drowning in it and I don't want to come out again. :) I don't think I need to rec everything she wrote - if you like her style, you'll have no problem finding the rest. This means there aren't five fics this month, just four. You know what? I haven't yet recced the Teen Wolf fic I read in February. So make this number five:

2 Brooklyn Nine-Nine
2 Timeless
1 Teen Wolf

everything is easier when you're home (77430 words, WIP) by
sergeantsantiago
Fandom: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Jake Peralta/Amy Santiago
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Neighbors, Slow Burn, and i mean very VERY slow burn
Summary:
Amy Santiago loves her new apartment. One bedroom, one bathroom, good neighborhood and decent rent. One thing she does not love? Her neighbors. More precisely, whoever lives in the apartment that shares a paper thin wall with hers.

My opinion: I didn't want to read it at first, because it sounds so fluffy-tropey, but I guess the repeated tumblr posts made me click on it after all. (I am following
sergeant-santiago on tumblr. She makes great gifs.) And it's not bad at all! I'm a sucker for slow burn. *g* It's not finished, of course, and she only posts a new chapter about every four weeks, but I found myself looking forward to it anyway. I like her characterization of both Amy and Jake. (Also, Boyle!)

Play It Safe. (1639 words) by

Fandom: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Jake Peralta/Amy Santiago
Additional Tags: Episode: s05e10 Game Night
Summary:
Jake isn't going to make that coming out all about him, but--it's making him question his comfortable spot in the closet.

My opinion: I like bi!Jake. The show has been playing it for laughs, so it's never really admitted as canon, but of course fandom has a different opinion. I like the serious interpretations of it, like in this fic.

Like a Dumpster on Fire (19314 words WIP) by
madsthenerdygirl
Fandom: Timeless (TV 2016)
Rating: Explicit
Relationships: OT3 in all combinations: Garcia Flynn/Lucy Preston, Garcia Flynn/Wyatt Logan/Lucy Preston, Wyatt Logan/Lucy Preston, Garcia Flynn/Wyatt Logan
Additional Tags: One Shot Collection, Smut, Shameless Smut, Nothing but smut, Kind of Safe Usually Sane Always Consensual, The Author Regrets Nothing, and everything, simultaneously
Summary:
The more intimate episodes in the relationship of our favorite trash OT3.

My opinion: Exactly what it says on the tin. A collection of smutty oneshots. Space it out, and maybe read it interspersed with the non-smutty but infinitely more cracky counterpart collection, Put it With the Rest of the Garbage.

A Hook in an Eye (32749 words WIP) by
madsthenerdygirl
Fandom: Timeless (TV 2016)
Rating: Explicit
Relationships: Garcia Flynn/Wyatt Logan/Lucy Preston, Rufus Carlin/Jiya
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Modern Setting (no time travel), So Many Indiana Jones References
Summary:
Two years ago, Dr. Lucy Preston said that you’d see her back in the field over her dead body.

Then she heard those six words.

“Wyatt’s gone missing. So has Flynn.”

My opinion: This is the fic that I am addicted to right now. It really reads like Indiana Jones. I love how the story jumps between the present and flashbacks, slowly revealing the course of their relationship (and what went wrong). It's totally going to have a happy ending, I'm sure of that, and I'm looking forward to new chapters every day.

Hibernation Station (72962 words) by
calrissian18
Fandom: Teen Wolf (TV)
Rating: Explicit
Relationships: Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - New York, Artist Derek, College Student Stiles
Summary:
Stiles meets his future husband on a rather unspectacular Wednesday.

My opinion: I got alerted to this fic because I'm subscribed to the author, who has written a ton of great Sterek. This fic starts on the crackiest of premises: Stiles falls in love with Derek on the subway, but Derek is always asleep there. Of course Derek falls in love, too, despite being asleep. My favorite parts of this whole story are those where we see Derek express his love through art, trying to picture Stiles in his artwork despite never having seen him. Also, hot sex, typically taciturn Derek, and endlessly babbling but competent Stiles.
