Things learned in January

Feb 02, 2017 08:32

Still reading up on politics, but there are various other things I learned this month, too, most notably interesting technical stuff about LJ and DW.

1. And here I thought Ezekiel was joking... wombats indeed shit cubes - http://theconversation.com/why-do-wombats-do-cube-shaped-poo-55975

2. German: Wörter vs. Worte - when to use which - http://www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/Wort (German site. You have to scroll down a little.)

3. Bulk change/delete LJ entries using this tool - http://www.mp3vcr.com/ljsec/
From this good post that has other useful links - http://www.metafilter.com/164293/LiveJournal-represents-social-media-without-borders

4. Politics: Brexit and Trump make people believe in EU again - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2016/11/24/europeans-start-liking-the-e-u-again/

5. Why Moana was renamed to Vaiana in Europe - not an ideal article but it does mention the copyright issues - https://themonsoonproject.org/2016/07/12/from-moana-to-vaiana-why-disneys-newest-polynesian-inspired-film-will-be-very-different-in-french/

6. Politics: Don't take stability and security and peace for granted - http://www.villagevoice.com/arts/stop-making-sense-or-how-to-write-in-the-age-of-trump-9575300

8. How did I not know this: via
rydra_wong: Hollywood had a puritan code that prohibited it from showing mixed-race relations, homosexuality, adultery, etc.etc. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-Code_Hollywood - how did I not know about this?

from the code: the term miscegenation "interracial marriage and sexual relations" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miscegenation

9. Kumbayah is not African but pidgin English for "come by here" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumbaya

10. The circle filtering on DW is vastly superior to the flist filtering on LJ: on LJ, you friend a person and can then select a list of tags you (dont) want to see in your feed. Then you can group persons together into groups. Meaning: no matter which group someone is in, you will always see the same of their tags in every group. On DW, you add a person and then define reading lists. After you've defined the lists, you can select which tags of which member of the list you want to see there. E.g. you can see icon posts of that person in your "icon" reading list and all the other posts of that person in your "normal" reading list.

11. Problems with freedom of the press (and what can be done) - http://pressthink.org/2016/12/winter-coming-prospects-american-press-trump/
