So I finally watched the last two eps of SPN last night. I didn't think I'd ever be inspired to write about SPN again, but there you go. ;)
First off, I have to say I didn't read anyone else's posts yet (and there are many), so this may not be anything original at all.
So, Chuck is God. Huh. That is kinda cool, but it also has several weird and icky connotations. One one hand, I like that he actually is there and is involved, but not showing himself. I liked that, even though it involved ending the episode in the usual, literal deus ex machina. On the other, it means that Kripke (et al) are saying they're God. Ew. Then again, they're whining that writing an ending is hard. I'm sure they intended it as self-deprecating, but it just felt whiny. Either say you're God and be happily omnipotent, or whine about people not liking your choices, but both at the same time is just absurd.
Do I have to read anything into the relationship between Chuck and his fangirl not working out? It feels like Kripke telling us he doesn't like us (anymore). Meh.
In a weird way, I like that he resurrected everyone. Of course, there is no show without Sam, but I don't care for Sam much, so whatever. Same with Bobby. (btw: I liked the whole thing with Crowley and Bobby's soul, and it was a pity that was left hanging.)
But: having Castiel die is worse than restoring him to full angel-ness. And I really didn't like him much, human as he was at the end. His transformation would have had a lot of potential, to explore how Castiel's awareness and insights change with his diminishing abilities. I mean, in the beginning, he was in Dean's head/dreams a lot. When he told Dean that he misjudged him, I realized I really would have liked to see how his view of the world, and especially of Dean, changed over time. I'm not sure how this will change Dean/Castiel fic writing, if at all.
I guess that was it for me and SPN. Don't hold me to it ;). I'll definitely be participating in and reading my way through the
spn_j2_bigbang this summer, and I don't regret any of it. It's been fun.
p.s.: two weeks after everyone else, my favorite quote from Season5 - by far:
Castiel: "Give it to me, Dean."
