Because, apparently, there can't be too much ranting about writing

Feb 27, 2008 07:21

Let me begin by acknowledging that the membership of this community may well be the wrong people to be ranting at on this issue. It's likely that those of you who joined or watch this comm have a full command of the language (in this case, English) and are cognizant of the proper and effective way to express your ideas in prose.

Cut, but not sanitized, for your flist's protection )

style, nitpicky, fandom customs that need to die, discussion prompt, rant

Well, my purpose in posting this was to find out if it's possible to build a consensus first. It would be better if this appeared to be a larger movement among like-minded members of the fandom rather than a couple of people in a bitchy mood, you know? ;)

Ultimately, I suspect a bloc won't win over the incorrigible. I think persistent, neutral commenting is probably the way to go. You know, the tortoise won and the mouse roared, etc, etc.

Oh, that's not quite what I meant. I was just hoping to inspire more than, say, just you and me to begin to offer the neutral concrit. In a small fandom just beginning, it's easier to consider doing such a thing, because there's not this crowd of established "regulars" ready to bully someone into silence. I thought perhaps if a number of us were to start gently pointing out some things, we could influence the culture of the fandom - at least on LJ - until it included some basic standards by default.

Ah! I geddit. We should start a con-crit fund. Make people pledge a certain number of helpful comments with tiered donation status.

Hmm. I think I just caught a glimpse of a new community.

If, perhaps, that comm did show up, I'd suggest maybe posting a link to the fic so we could EVER SO POLITELY SWARM THEM in hopes that we can get them to...well, improve. I don't know about anyone else but I like constructive criticism a lot more than just "WHEE THIS WAS LOVELY WRITE MORE PLZ".

And boy does that sound pretentious, but it's...kind of true.

Should I be concerned or should I wonder about your mental health?

But I'd totally join. But I didn't say that, of course.

No, no. I am eccentric. The evil business is very profitable, you see.

Until James Bond shows up and you get electrocuted or something, at least, I'll give you that. ♥
