He put on the spectacles, blinked a few times, and smiled. “There. That’s much better,” he said. “Well? How do I look?”
Cain watched him curiously, appraisingly. They were both standing in Glitch’s (Ambrose’s?) lab, having just tracked down the missing glasses. “I didn’t know you wore glasses,” he said. He paused, unsure of what to say. “They make you look... smart?”
“I didn’t know either, until the Queen asked me why I wasn’t wearing them.” He admired his reflection in a small metal container. “Hm, I do look smarter. The illusion is complete!”
“It’s not an illusion. You just finally look the part.”
“Aw, thanks. I thought this was going to be one of those times where I insult myself and you agree.” He looked around the pristine, orderly lab. It was not what either of them had expected. “I’d have to be dumb, though, to lose something in here. I bet he alphabetized his pens.”
Cain was going to ask him how one alphabetized pens in the first place, but opted not to. “Do you remember how you lost them?” he asked.
“Sorta... He was in his lab, working on battle plans, when he learned that Central City had fallen and Lonot had defected- speaking of Lonot, I wonder when we’ll run into him... Anyway, he must have taken them off to clean them when he heard the news. See, there’s a little crack at the corner. Ah well, I need new lenses, anyway. I probably require a much stronger prescription now.”
“Wait... Are you nearsighted or farsighted?”
“Both. I’m blind as a bat.”
“So you... Spent our entire adventure wandering around in a blur?”
“Hm? I suppose so. It was a very nice blur, though.”
