“Mrs. Swift, let me repay you for the excellent meal by refilling the wood cote. It looked low.”
The old woman reached for his plate. “That’s kind of you, young man, I’m afraid I can’t heft an ax like I used to.”
“Glitch, why don’t you clear the dishes?”
“But I want to watch you split wood.”
“I don’t need help splitting wood.”
“I didn’t say I wanted to help, I just want to watch.”
Cain turned red and strode from the cabin.
Mrs. Swift cackled and patted Glitch’s shoulder. “You and me both, dearie.”
