Rubbish
(Rewey's Diner on The Rue, Downhill, Central City)

With a frown, Demilo continued his run of reason. ‘Look, Rudy, for the zillionth time, I don’t know any Hawskins. Stop coming here asking me. I’ve got my own problems! Tin Men, Longcoats, you name it, it’s falling on my back like an angry mobat. I’d give anything to get to the Other Side, get out of-’

‘We’ve got enough of our own rubbish, thank you.’

‘Come on, Rudy, please? We’re talking my tragic death here.’

Rudy’s beady eyes tightened. That ended the resemblance between cousins. ‘You’d better not be lying to me, Demilo.’

‘Who’s got neck enough to lie these days?’

Rudy thoughtfully sipped coffee. ‘The necks of traitors are always longest.’

Mondays
(The Sticky Wicket, London, UK)

Two days later, Rudy went to Eddie and Pippin. ‘Demilo knows nothing. But he’s scared.’ Leaving, Rudy dropped an object on the table.

‘No sign of Hawskins. Now will you give this up?’ Pippin was insistent.

Eddie fondled the matchbook. ‘Demilo knows something. It might be small. And maybe he doesn’t know he knows it.’

Pippin passed faint curiosity to Eddie. ‘What are you thinking?’

‘You don’t know?’

‘It’s hard to tell what you’re thinking on Mondays.’

Eddie stood before a map, five feet by seven, that One Ball Bill had let him put up, on the American side of The Sticky Wicket. It was all crooked streets and squares. With a tack, Eddie found Downhill, one of the O.Z.’s Central City neighbourhoods, and stuck on the matchbook.

‘It’s weird, Monty.’

‘Your Hawskins obsession?’

‘To know a place as well as I know the O.Z. and not be able to get there.’

‘Click your heels together and say “There’s no place like the O.Z.” Should work. Then we could find that traitor Demilo ourselves.’

Eddie watched him with a crooked smile.

‘What?’

‘You just admitted you want to go.’

‘Did I?’ Pippin looked startled. ‘Damn, didn’t mean to do that…’
