Crack!
Her eyes opened; above her head, the canvas ceiling flashed and danced in the firelight.
Crack!
Crawling out, she saw him, her eyes drawn to nothing else, only him; his back to her, his white shirt tinted orange in the light. Slowly, she focused on the bonfire, the silhouette of the cabin.
“Cain?”
Crack!
“Evenin', Princess.”
Cautiously, she went to him; he held the broken chair from the dooryard, tearing it apart with his bare hands, feeding the fire with the pieces.
“Can't sleep?” she asked.
“Slept enough in this place.”
She took from him the remains of the chair, a leg and crossbar, and tossed them unceremoniously into the fire. Then, she slid her warm hand into his cold, rough one, and stared, as he did, into the flames.
Note: Someone said "porn-stick" and I heard "chair-leg".
