There are a bunch of MS giving campaign flyers up in the building that are giving statistics on homeless and poverty. They are annoying me because I suspect that many of them are wrong, out of context, and mostly misleading. Today I spotted one that came out on top as most unconvincing "fact ( Read more... )

Actually, I think this is accurate. Maybe the wording could have been more starkly factual presented as "1 in 3 people who benefit from the services of Seattle's food banks is a child under the age of 18", but I think people with children are a lot more likely to swallow their pride and get food assistance than people who are just going hungry themselves.

I personally feel that it's really important to participate in giving time or money, whichever works best for an individual, to causes that they support. Can you really support something without giving some form of support, even if it is small? I give 2% of my income to charities for causes I believe in. One of those charities is Northwest Harvest, a non-profit Washington hunger relief agency (food bank). 40% of their services are provided to children.

So, I guess I'm just confused on your entry about if you wanted to have the facts verified or you had a different question. I hope that you aren't so annoyed now when you see them, since they aren't meant to mislead but rather to be truthful and informative. :)
