October 2010
“Emily!” David’s voice bellowed across the bustling sound stage. “Emily!?” Emily heard him, as did the other 20 people who were trying to set up the scene. She was purposefully not answering him. She made it a point to ignore him when he acted like an impatient child. “EM!”
“Oh, will you just answer him!” Michaela said with a hint of irritation. David was fun and brought an energy to the set that everyone desperately needed. But, it had been a long day, and the cast and crew just wanted to get their scenes done and over with. “You know he’s not going to stop until you do.” Michaela sent Emily a knowing look.
Sighing. Emily unbuttoned her blue lab coat and fanned her face with her hand. She suddenly felt hot and suffocated. She was sure it had everything to do with the man quickly approaching her. “Emily!”
Emily whipped her head around as she spat his name. “I’m right here.” David was the most infuriating man she had ever met. He drove her to the point of insanity sometimes. He knew it, and it only seemed to egg him on even more.
“Oh, I didn’t see you there.” He teased, and stood in between her and Michaela. Emily rolled her eyes. Some days, he barely spoke to her at all. He was moody and unpredictable. Other days, he was around her all of the time and extremely needy. If he wasn’t going through so many things in his personal life, she would have thought he was bi-polar the way he shifted moods so drastically.
David’s eyes were gleaming with an energy that seemed to radiate off of him. Despite her annoyance, she smiled. She couldn’t resist him. And....sometimes, she hated herself for it. “What do you want, David?” She tried to make it seem as if she didn’t care in the least, but it failed. He saw right through her and his smirk grew wider.
“I need to talk to you.”
“Right now?”
“Yeah.” He nodded enthusiastically and then said under his breath, “it can’t wait.” Emily’s brow furrowed in concern. Him and Jaime were legally separated. He was currently living in a hotel until he found a house to lease and the days he got to see his kids were few and far between. Emily knew it was killing him, which is why she let his mood swings slide.
“We are going to start this scene soon...” She argued, fighting an internal battle with herself. Her heart sped up, as it did anytime he demanded her attention. At her words, David looked over to the director. Some technical issue was happening with the camera, and a crowd of crew members were gathered around the piece of equipment.
“It doesn’t look like you are gonna be filming anytime soon.” He suggested. Emily followed his gaze and nibbled at her lip. The makeup artist would be by to redo her makeup, but she kept nibbling anyway.
“I don’t want to keep them waiting.” She was desperately trying not to give in to him.
Michaela nudged her in the arm with her elbow. “Emily...” She warned. “We’re never going to get out of here if you don’t.” Her voice was a whisper, but there was no doubt David was listening.
“It’s true.” He butted in. “Come on Em...just a few minutes? Please?”
Eying him up skeptically, Emily sighed in defeat. “Alright....” She made it clear that it was against her better judgement, but David didn’t care.
“Great!” He said in excitement. “Let’s go!” David grabbed her arm and started pulling her away from the lab platform set before Emily could even protest.
He didn’t stop until they reached the double doors that separated the set from the sound stage it was held in. “David, what the hell?” She didn’t like being forced to go anywhere.
David looked around wildly to make sure no one was around and then moved close to her. “It’s been three months.” He said ecstatically. He was so excited that he couldn’t stand still. Emily stared at him in confusion. She wasn’t understanding the connection. “3 months!”
The fact that Emily had no idea what he was talking about didn’t deter his excitement in the least. “Okay...” She stuttered. Thinking she had missed some birthday or anniversary, she quickly racked her brain.
David could almost see the wheels in her head spinning. Impatiently, he put his hands on her toned upper arms and shook them lightly. “Three months, Em! I haven’t been with any women in three months. I haven’t even tried!” It wasn’t something a normal guy brag about. But, Emily recognized his triumph for what it was and her eyes widened as it clicked into place.
She didn’t know what to say at first. Three months ago, when David had showed up at her door a defeated man and agreed to spend one full year getting his act together, Emily had been skeptical. She really didn’t think he would do it. She didn’t even want to allow herself to hope that he would.
“David...that’s...” She started, still not sure what to reply.
As if reading her mind, he said, “You didn’t think I’d do it.” His statement wasn’t an accusation. He knew it was true. He could see the disbelief in her blue eyes.
“I...” Even though she hated being anything but honest, for a split second, she thought about lying to spare his feelings. But, it would have been pointless. His intense brown eyes were scanning hers and silently taking her emotions in.
“It’s okay.” He said, smugly. “I like being able to prove you wrong.”
Emily lifted her chin slightly, and the motion made David’s eyes drift down to her lips. Unconsciously, he licked his lips and Emily felt arousal pool into her groin. Their faces were only inches apart. She could feel his hot breath on her face. Knowing they were in dangerous territory, she kicked her rational mind into over drive.
“You still have 9 months to go.” She argued, hoping he couldn’t tell how badly he was getting to her.
“You better be ready, because you’re gonna be paying up. You owe me a date.”
“If...you can last.”
“Oh, trust me. I can.” They were both silent for a minute. The bustling of the sound stage sank into the background as they stared each other down. The moment grew too intense, and Emily was the first to pull away.
“I’ve got to get back.”
David hesitantly dropped his arms and smiled. “I know.” She returned his smile and walked away, but, before she could get very far, she stopped and turned back.
“I’m proud of you.” She whispered. His eyes lit up like a kid on Christmas morning. Emily had to force herself to walk away. It was hard to go when he was staring at her so happily. A tiny little seed of hope took residence deep within her, but only time would tell if she would allow it to grow or not.
