So this weekend was a ton of fun. I hate that a tragedy had to happen for me to have this opportunity, but I had a ton of fun. There were three sessions of tapings on the paramount studio lot, one Friday and two Saturday (making for a two hour day plus the 2 hour drive home!!) but my sister and I stayed for all three. We met a few funny people who also hung in there for all three sessions. It felt like we were having a slumber party we were just all together so long the last two days. John was AMAZING!!
Friday:
Good Charlotte- Well, Benji and Joel. I hate that they bill them as Good Charlotte. It took them several takes and Benji said that he had not "sang a note" that day. There was a little banter between the two of them. Joel screwed up the "testimonial" part and Benji said he was dumb. So Benji did it and I think they used it.
Maroon 5- The guys were interacting with the very intimate, 60 person crowd. It took them one shot to do both songs. They were in and out which was unfortunate for us because I would have liked to have spent some more time with them!! All of the "second" songs are offered on the internet so I encourage everyone to check them out! A lot of the songs that will be on the net were better that the TV songs! Oh and Kristi got one of the picks from the guys.
Beck- Was late, really late. So we waited and waited. When he finally got there he was talking to the crowd a lot. He seemed a little surprised to see us. His song was a little boring at first but it grew on me after the 8th take!!
John Mayer-- What can I say, what can I say?? There were some haters in the audience who changed their tune after his performance. He did Gravity first and it came out clean and perfect but he decided to do it again just for the heck of it. I think he liked playing in the setting. He kept saying that his amp sounded trashy...but in a good way Ha! Gravity is such a pretty song! Then he did the Cissy Strutt and the first one again came out perfect but he did it again at our request. He had the audience yell with him in the opening part the second time around and when they decided to use it he said that we would all be in a video screaming on the internet although it probably wouldn't be the first time for some of us. It was heaven, I tell you, Heaven.
Trent Reisner of NIN- Did not interact with us at all. The crowd was so tired and his songs were so blah...it kind of dragged on and on. But we got through it.
Saturday--
Fiona Apple- Wow she is short. It took her a couple of takes and she thanked us for being patient. I had never heard the song she did before, but it was cute.
Kelly Clarkson-- showed up LATE and looking like crap. Apparently she had just learned the song the day before (so we were the first audience to EVER hear it.) so she was still working the kinks out with her guitar player. After several rehersals and forgotten words, they decided to put the lyrics on a teleprompter. Then she had trouble with her testimonial. They kept telling her to keep it short and sweet and she kept adding and adding to it. Finally she got the testimonial and the song right and she thanked us and left.
Brian Wilson-- Is realy, really old. He was scarily old and looked like a dinosaur when he sang. Reminded us of Ozzy, in a way. Everyone kind of moved around and for him. He just sat there with a blank look on his face. I again, liked his second song better.
The Radiators- Are also really old, but they were really, really good. They are from Louisiana so it was pretty neat to see.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers- They held a closed rehersal so we all had to clear the stage and stand outside the soundstage while they rehearsed. IT was a little annoying but worth it when we got inside and they did under The Bridge. It took two takes, but we didn't mind, trust me.
The Game- Taped right before we went live, did one take and when asked to do another one decided he wanted to enter from sitting in the audience...so who does he decide to sit by?? ME!! And I was like you chose the least coordinated white un hip hopable person in this whole audience to sit next to for your entrance!?! I talked to him a little bit but had no idea what to say...so what is the tear drop for? you body guard is carrying a rather large gun this evening. He was okay though. He did his thing and then left.
Melissa Etheridge-- Was really good. She came out and joked around with the audience. HEr wife was there. She again did a never before heard acapella song. It was really sad. I think I would have been a lot more emotional if she had music behind it, but her voice is AMAZING!
Goo Goo DOlls- Came out and talked to the audience. Johnny Reznick all of a sudden popped up in front of my sister asking how the audience got tickets to the show. SO we explained the process to him, he shook our hands and they played an awesome rehersal. After which, he gave me his pick! I was disappointed it doesn't say GOo GOo Dolls like Kristis says Maroon 5, but it was still cool.
Audioslave-- I liked the song that they did. There was a bit of interaction and the guitar guy gave our buddy his pick at the end.
Dennis Quaid- Shook hands and said hello
George Lopez- had the whole audience cracking up. We were given directions and he asked who didn't get it and told us to go to Sylvan Learning School, by Rite Aid...it was really funny coming from him.
In all it was a ton of fun. We got to know the stage manager and camera guys because it was a real intimate, small audience with a lot of breaks in between. I think I have found what I want to do in life. I want to marry my two interests and make TV music specials.
I know that there was more that I wanted to write about this subject, BUT I must head to bed so I can get in line for my John Mayer show bright and early tomorrow morning. Details to follow Courtney, I promise!!
