movie accents

On one of the web sites I frequent a bit too much during the work day there is a discussion about accents in movies. They are specifically making fun of Tom Cruise and his non-German accent in the "Valkyrie" movie trailer. They are also arguing about the other accents, the use of accents all together, and subtitles. People get so angry over this!
Yes it does suck when someone can't do a convincing accent (I'm looking at you, Kevin Costner!) or kinda drops in and out of one. But for the most part, when it's a film that is taking place in a foreign country (like Germany)  where English is not the spoken language, I always think that the characters are speaking in the language and we the audience are just hearing English (thank goodness for the Babel Fish!). Otherwise, the subtitles would take away from the action, as not everyone can read that fast.
I'm just sayin'.
