After what had happened with Vala, Barney didn't know what had sent him to Tink's door. It wasn't like he'd expect her to take the truth any better than Vala had, but still, Tink was...special.

So he was knocking.

Tink stormed home. She had to change. One couldn't go in to the lab in clothes that had been through a catfight. That horrid, terrible bitch.

She was sauntering up her front stairs when she saw him.

Him.

Barney.

The only man she'd ever really loved.

"Good morning," she said, hoping her voice didn't shake. "It's been a long time."

"Tink," Barney's eyes were full of hope, his mind swirling in the memories...No, he couldn't allow himself this.

"I...Vala and I are done."

Her eyes stung with tears. After all he'd done to her to come back and pretend that she was just another doormat!

She ignored how her heart was singing at his words. No. Never again. She wouldn't let herself trust ...

"So you've finally rid yourself of that worthless whore," she said, as coldly as she could manage. "Why are you telling me?"

She was so cold, but he knew her, the real Tink. They'd been in love once, she was his only true love. Maybe he could allow it after all.

"Because you're the only person left here who I can trust," Barney told her, stepping forward. "I've been living a lie for so long I couldn't see what was right here. I know I hurt you when I left...I was wrong."

"You were," Tink said, in a voice which was shaking. "You were horribly wrong. You threw me away, after all that we had had. I thought we meant something to one another and now I'm wondering if that was just another lie."

"It wasn't," Barney promised. "Vala was the lie. She used me to get to my money and is tossing me out like so much garbage. You would never toss me out, Tink We really had something there."

Her heart was breaking for him ... for them ... for herself.

"How could I ever trust you again?" she whispered. "How could I begin to believe that you wouldn't walk away from me the next time some girl tosses her hair?"

"I was scared before, Tink," Barney admitted. "Your beauty and ambition made me feel inadequate in comparison, but I'm different now." A day could do that to a guy.

Tink sighed. "I'm wealthy, beautiful, and a Nobel-prize winning physicist," she said. "I'm used to that being intimidating. My darling, I should have thought that if that were bothering you, you would say something. Not ... run off to some cheap whore."

"I was afraid how you would react if I tol-" Oh, he hadn't meant to say that. "If I told you that you were my first true love." Nice save.

Tink turned, wavering, and reached to place her hand against her cheek. "I would have said that you were mine," she sighed. "You ... always will be. Oh, Barney."

He leaned into her touch, "Oh, Tink!" He couldn't do this to her again. Not without telling the truth. No backing out, Stinson. "There's...something else you need to know!"

"No," she said, her eyes welling with tears. Her hand covered his lips. "Not yet. Let me cherish this moment ... please ... don't ruin it yet ..."

Then it was her lips, covering his lips. Her sweet Barney! Hers! Hers!
