despite the fact that i haven't posted in quite some time - here i am, to do an assignment for class. edp 310 - education psychology. it's interesting. right now we are discussing morality, religion, faith, etc so i'm enjoying myself. i figured posting my assignment here would make sense as i tend to discuss things of this nature on here occasionally.
morality versus ethics? what is the difference? i'm not sure i know. ethics, i was taught, is the gray area - right is white, wrong is black (or the other way around - not trying to offend anyone here) and everything inbetween becomes a matter of ethics. now, i believe that i have strong, high ethics. i also believe that i have strong, high morals - but i'm still not sure how to define morals.
according to merriam-webster:
morals - principles of right and wrong
ethics - a set of moral principles
so i guess ethics is based on your morals. well, fine... i'll leave that issue at that.
now, morality versus religion: do your morals define your religion or does your religion define your morals. in my case, i was brought up in a home with high standards and strong Christian beliefs. i was taught how to behave before i formed my beliefs so i would say that morals were established for me before religion (despite the fact that religion was a strong part of my upbringing and still is today). i wonder about those that are brought up without a moral influence. as a child we had a young man steal our vehicle. through a series of strange occurrances he ended up becoming like a foster brother of sorts and living with us. he did not have guidance growing up. his family did not love him or take care of him, but after living with us he learned the difference between right and wrong (developed morals) and also came to accept Christ as his savior. i wonder if he first learned morals or our religious beliefs that also play into our morals? if he were alive today i would ask him.
there really is so much to contemplate. i hope some of you can take a moment to respond, because despite the fact that i am posting this because it is an assignment, i would be very much interested in your responses. these are quite interesting topics.
