Read or Die

Jun 24, 2007 14:30

For those who have recently friended me in LJ and haven't participated/heard in RodCon (Read or Die Convention) 2007, here's a small intro (for the noobs) and some news on upcoming events.

Read or Die

Read or Die is a non-profit Philippine based book club which holds monthly meetings in different bookstores (usually)all over Metro Manila. This society has been promoting literacy, love for reading and appreciation for literature, especially those written by Filipino artists.

Read or Die was in the spotlight last February with RodCon 2007, a two day literary convention at the Hotel Intercontinental, Makati City that brought together readers, writers, publishers, literary organizations and several prominent figures in Philippine literacy.

RoD has a weblog that NEVER lacks in updates (news, reviews, feature articles) and a website, in which you can find more information about the society.

And now: Libro.ph

Here is an excerpt about the Libro.ph launching from Tin's (of RodCon's) longish email:

Thanks to the kindness of the Filipinas Heritage and the National Book Development Board, we'll be hosting a very very very soft launch for Libro.ph on June 30 at the literary exhibit at the Glorietta 3 Park. It's pretty much an unofficial event but everyone is welcome to attend. Libro.ph is one of the web projects we've been developing over the summer; it's not meant to be a replacement of other literary portals like Panitikan or Filipino Writer but to supplement information about Filipino literature (and maybe other Asian literatures as well) online through building author sites, posting reading guides to Filipino books, hosting bibliographies and indexes, profiling literary groups and institutions, as well as building a community for Filipinos interested in literature. We'll be hosting free blogs based on Wordpress for registered members (registration is free--your blog will be hosted under the libro.ph domain) and members can also create and join online book clubs, promote their events, set up or volunteer for book drives and reading campaigns online, and so on. We'll also be hosting an industry blog which will be a sort of group blog composed of different sectors of the literary industry. It's probably not going to be an overnight hit or anything like that and will likely remain a work in progress for some time, but everyone is welcome to take part in it.

Anyway, we'll send a separate invite containing details of the launch. You can also write to us about it by replying to this email or contacting me at 09283555365.
