Advenrures of Fitzgerald

I'm writing a short story that my turn out to be a short book about Fitzgerald and his adventures around the world, thanks to being abducted by aliens.  Little do they know that they've gotten more than they've bargained for and the beage wreaks havoc wherever he goes.  It's suppsed to be therapeautic.  Here's what I have so far.

Once there was a beagle named Fitzgerald and he was a very inquisitive and mischievous beagle, as beagles are famous for being. He was into everything, pulling down bedclothes and stealing cat food. The toilet paper was one of his favourite toys, so it had to be placed outside of his reach. In fact, there were tons of things that had to be placed outside Fitzgerald’s reach and he was banished to the outside with his rawhide bone because he just couldn’t behave.

He was fine with that. He had a large fenced yard to explore and plenty of squirrels with whom to argue. Also there were an abundance of sticks, roots, and toys to keep any dog happy. And Fitzgerald got to come into the house for naps and snacks, so he was a happy little dog. He liked his people very much and they loved him dearly, despite the terror he put them through. They chalked it up to the fact that he was just a puppy and still learning. All it took was love and discipline and Fitzgerald would turn out to be a most respectable beagle.

One thing Fitzgerald was, like all beagles, was wily. He didn’t show it often to his people, letting them think that he was a little bit stupid. But he was very wily and keen when it came to things. This came in handy one day when a spaceship hovered over the house and yard and picked Fitzgerald up in a beam of greenish yellow light.

Up up up he went, the light surrounding him like a soft cushion. Fitzgerald did not know what to think. He was digging the floating feeling when it suddenly came to an in end and he was inside a metallic structure inhabited by grey beings with large slanted black eyes and tiny mouths.

“Greetings,” one of them said in Fitzgerald’s dog language. “Please do not be afraid. We are here to learn from you.”

“Afraid?” Fitzgerald said. “I’m not afraid, just a little perplexed that you chose me.”

“Young beagles are notorious for exploration and we want to learn from your motivations.”

“Oh that’s simple; if I want to get into something, I will if I can. Simple, like I said. Will you give me a ride in your spaceship before dropping me back off in my yard?”

The Greys looked at each other with dismay, then one of them said “We want to place you in different situations and see what you do. What do you think of that?”

Fitzgerald considered the Grey’s proposal, then grinned a little the way beagles can grin in that mischievous way.

“You have a deal, creepy alien people. Let’s go see what trouble we can get into.”

The spaceship took off and zipped around the world, stopping suddenly over a busy street.

“Go down there,” said the Grey. “And take in all that you can. Learn about the humans and we will pick you up so that you tell us what you learn.”

“Goodo!” exclaimed Fitzgerald, dancing back and forth on his big beagle feet.
