A little while ago, I finally got around to watching the first season of the new Doctor Who, and I have to say I loved it. I watched the entire series over the span of about four days. I was very impressed with what they've done with the show; they've tightened up the format a lot, but there's clear respect for the older incarnations of the show and a sense of continuity that I found very comforting. Sure, some of the plots were silly, but that's in the spirit of the show too, and it's OK. Well, with me at least...
I really liked Christopher Eccleston's doctor. So much so that I'm even rethinking Tom Baker's spot at the top of the list. The one episode with David Tennant that I've seen wasn't bad, and certainly he's no Sylvester McCoy, but I'm going to miss Big Ears.
I really don't know how someone who hadn't seen the original would react to the show. Certainly the production values are much better than the original, though I have to admit there are still some wince-inducing elements. I think it's not for everyone, and you certainly need to be able to suspend disbelief and remember that it's all in fun. But if you're curious, and enjoy scifi stuff in general, I think you should try it. The first episode will only take you 44 minutes, and then you'll know.
