"Uwaaaaa, it's another beautiful morning, isn't it Aria shachō?"

Akari grinned at the rather enthusiastic reply from the blue eyed name sake of the Aria Company as she finished putting the cover of her gondola away, the cat having already taken position on the plush bench seat usually reserved for customers. It was rare for the prima and, currently only, member of the Aria Company to have free time, especially in sping and especially in the morning - she'd become known for providing early risers with some of the most breathtaking views of sunrise on the planet. There was something about spring that just left the undine energized - granted, she could say the same about every season, but there was an excitement to the Aqua spring that left her restless and ready. The feeling always disappeared the night of the Aqua Alta, but until then, dawn found Akari and the white and blue gondola of Aria Company gliding across the still and sun colored waters of the delta......

"I feel like pink today. What do you think Aria shachō?" the women asked softly as she rowed out towards the San Marco Plaza, angling the gondola for the Fairway Station and the floating island which, even at this distance, was like a cloud of pink and white blossoms, almost as if it were a cupcake dipped in frosting.

The wind was stirring now as the sun shrugged its blanket of night off a golden shoulder and began to rise, petals dropping down in a sweet scented rain.

"Beautiful." the women sighed, smiling as she held out a hand to catch a slowly drifting petal, Aria purring and mewling in excitement.

At least, until a second hand darted out to catch the petal before it settled in the women's outstretched hand, Akari giving a displeased and startled cry as she spun to find a familiar face waiting for her.

"Ah! Akatsuki-san, good morning! You startled me!"

"I was wondering if you were going to crash into the pier before you noticed." Akatsuki said almost accusingly, arms crossing as he glared at the women, Akari smiling blithely as she stilled the gondola so she could turn and face him properly. "You're late today Miss Pigtails."

"Late?" the women asked curiously, tilting her head thoughtfully. "I guess I did leave a little later than usual, but I didn't have an appointment this morning either. Wow, you're so astute Akatsuki-san, I didn't notice that, thank you."

"It's not like I follow your schedule or anything. I mean, I was in love with Alicia for so long it's just a habit to look when I see a blue and white gondola. And it's not like there's more than one of them so I'd noticed it anyway even if I didn't want to, and hardly anyone has appointments as early as you do." the man said quickly, his face growing redder the longer he spoke.

Akari only cocked her head, fingertips coming to rest lightly on the corner of her chin in thought.

“You know, you’re right again, but isn’t the morning always the best time? It’s like Aqua is being beautiful only for you, like it’s a secret you get to share, don’t you think?”

“It is.” the salamander said softly, something in his tone and the sudden seriousness of his expression sending a shiver down the undine’s spine, the faintest flush coloring her cheeks.

For a moment, the only sound to be heard was the gentle slap of water against the stone walkway and the wooden sides of the gondola as the pair simply stared at one another, neither Akari or Akatsuki quite certain what to say next or how to relieve the tension which had seemingly sprung up out of nowhere.

And then the familiar rumble of a feline stomach and a plaintive mew interrupted whatever it was that had passed between them, Akari looking down with an apologetic smile.

“Ah, it’s time for breakfast isn’t it, Aria shachō?”

“And I have...errands.” Akatsuki said with a nervous kind of chuckle, already stepping back and away, Akari offering him one of her usual smiles, as if nothing had happened, a fact that both relieved and frustrated the salamander in equal parts.

“Have a good day then, Akatsuki-san.” the undine replied with a wave before placing one foot lightly on the stone side of the walkway and pushing off, oar dipping soundlessly into the water, humming softly to herself as they parted ways.
