... you google ( yes, it's a verb now! ) "largest fandoms" and go through the list for something to check out, join and belong in.
Game of Thrones seems big, and I own the first two seasons + 6 books, but it's said to be about politics, despicable, backstabbing characters, sex and violence, none of which I have much interest in. I... haven't really felt inspired to start with it yet. I don't even know how much actual fantasy stuff ( wizards, elves, unicorns, etc ) there is in it, and I haven't looked it up for fear of spoilers. ( Besides, I prefer sci-fi to fantasy nowadays. )
Avengers? Legend of Korra? I'm not doing computer games or music, which also have fandoms and end up on the lists. Also I'm not doing realistic stuff like Sherlock or Breaking Bad. Sorry, I'm that narrow-minded. I want my escape from reality.
There's always Trek of course, but I don't really care for the reboot, and that's what's happening right now. It's also a very old fandom so everything has already been said, and people who have been active in the fandom for a long time get all snarky about "yeah, we finished discussing that topic 40 years ago so just shut up and read the old threads". Then again, even if it was ok to talk about things other people have already discussed, I don't really have much to say. ( Still have a soft spot for the blue guys and recently rewatched the Shran episodes, but I'm probably the only person who does now. )
Doctor Who? I've seen exactly one episode in my life. It was about pig aliens, farting aliens and a Doctor who seemed to find everything just hilarious. It was part 1 of a 2-parter... and since I didn't watch part 2, I think you can guess my opinion of it. But, hey, if "I, Mudd" had been my first Star Trek episode, I don't know if I'd have continued watching the show. Doctor Who has a huge backstory and back catalogue of episodes though. I really can't afford buying all that right now. Also, it's so much to learn before I can get involved with the fandom.
Twilight and Hunger Games are for younger people ( teen characters ). I have in fact read the first chapters of "Twilight" and the first book of "The Hunger Games" online. Yes, slow days, nothing better to do and curiosity got the better of me. Twilight was like a book written by a 14-year-old, who had just discovered sarcasm and thought it made her so sophisticated, for 14-year-olds. Hunger Games was ok, but nothing I felt anything special for. Haven't read the other two. Find it hard to identify with teenagers. Heck, I could have been the mother of a teenager at my age! ( Yes, I know there are the "Twi-moms", but... )
Then there's My Little Pony of course. Yes, for an even younger target demographic than the above, but for some reason I like kiddie shows better than teen shows. I've spent so many hours on MLP lately and it's an insanely active and creative fandom, but for some reason there's nothing that makes me actually want to be active in the fandom.
Been thinking of forcing myself back to Stargate. Because I can probably make myself like McShep ( relationship, not porn ) while I'm totally indifferent to nuKirk/nuSpock ( or any Kirk/Spock ). ( Those two pairings are what the creative parts of the fandoms are about. ) And I already know Stargate, so I don't have to learn any new things, really, just freshen up my memory.
I hate starting over. It gets harder every time I slip out of a fandom and try to join a new one, lose friends and try to make new ones. I don't just want to kill time watching or reading something, I want to be a part of something. I used to join fandoms out of passion for the subject, but now I seem to want to join or re-join a fandom to find passion in something. I guess that's the wrong motivation to make it work.
