Just thought I'd share how things went! Despite only spending almost exactly $2000 (including rings but not including honeymoon), it was everything I'd hoped for :)
I got married 5/30/09 and went on honeymoon to the Yucatan/Quintana Roo area of Mexico, in and around Cancun.
For anyone who's curious about the preparations, here's
my only progress post, at 109 days out: it all pretty much stayed according to that plan.
Here's some of the 25 sample shots my photographer's sent me so far:
<--the cake was a three-tiered chess cake meant to look like a Star Trek chess cake
And some other pics (thank you,
amyannosu !) that show other handmade details:
I don't have a shot of it yet, but we did have food: Husband(!) and his uncle and cousin cooked up bulk amounts of chinese food that we picked up from Gordon Food Service, which is sort of like a Sam's Club.
If I could give one suggestion to someone starting out, it's not to worry if you don't have much money to work with. Just be creative and willing to make things yourself. Really and truly, I don't think that budget hindered us too much. We did almost everything, and what we couldn't do, we found inexpensive help. And it all worked out :)
And then, the honeymoon. Definitely not part of the budget; a gift from my dad. We spent three days in Tulum, one in Valladolid, two in Merida, and one in Cancun. We saw lots of beaches, ruins, and old-fashioned Mexican towns.
By the way: If I had to recommend one? Definitely Tulum. Has a beach like Cancun, but it's less busy, and you're always surrounded by nature. It's very romantic, plus it's right beside some gorgeous Mayan ruins.
