My boss has just taken on a new client so the gallery has been pretty busy lately. I don't think people realize the detail and dedication it takes to put an exhibit together. When I was studying in college I didn't picture myself spending days on the phone negotiating deals, leveling and re-leveling paintings on walls that need to be painted the perfect shade of eggshell white (my boss' demands, not mine), and pushing around pedestals until someone agrees that everything is perfect, but to see the finished product...to be able to say you helped contribute to something like this, it's a reward all in itself.
I think a lot of artists focus on competing to get their own work off the ground for so long--which isn't exactly a bad thing, I'm doing it too, but sometimes people forget how calming it is to just take a step back and appreciate it all.
Now I just hope my boss decides against producing the prospective client who works with rotting food. I'm very open-minded when it comes to self-expression, but not to the point where I think a stack of old pizza boxes and a block of moldy cheese symbolizes the evolution of man. Just...no.

a random time to appreciate the arts
