I took the Katrina Rebirth bus tour then saw "Hurricane on the Bayou" IMAX movie back to back due to scheduling flukes. I then took myself to the Audubon Aquarium, discovered they don't have the reptile display I want, but lingered there, watching the penguins, manta rays, river otters & seahorses until I got my emotions back under control from the previous two events. Both the tour and the IMAX do a good job of blending the realities of the tragedy with the hope and optimism for the future, but it still left me emotionally ragged.
I expected that. It's one of the reasons I came down to take these particular tours without the class first. I knew they'd hit me hard, and I wanted a chance to deal with my emotions first, privately, before I had a class in tow. Having already taken the tour and scene the movie once, the emotional impact should be muted the second time, making me more aware and available to students who may want to talk through their feelings afterward.
The night is young. I'll post another blog entry from last night before I hit the street again.
