TROUBLE IN A MEMBERS ONLY JACKET
Bloomberg News reports that “The President has authorized our military forces in Iraq to kill or capture Iranian agents after determining that earlier efforts to curb Iran's aid to Shiite insurgents in Iraq weren't working.”
Any operations against Iranians will be conducted only in Iraq. (I say that’s too bad.) I disagree with the President when he says we can solve any other issues we have with Iran diplomatically.A week ago, Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV of W. Virginia, said that the White House efforts to portray Iran as a growing threat are "uncomfortably reminiscent" of Iraq before the American invasion of 2003. Mr. Rockefeller said the administration was building a case against Tehran even as American intelligence agencies still know little about either Iran's internal dynamics or its intentions in the Middle East.
And Senator Joseph "Are my Teeth White enough for You?" Biden of Delaware, recently issued a "sharp warning" to the administration about the raids against Iranians in Iraq. Although the White House has said there are no plans to pursue Iranian agents into their own country, Mr. Biden said any cross-border operations "will generate a constitutional confrontation here in the Senate." Something to look forward to.
Now, mind you Congress does not have to be consulted in military operations by the President. Bill Clinton authorized military operations in the former Yugoslavia without consulting the Congress. Where was the media then? Every President has taken the position that it is an unconstitutional infringement on the Presidents’ authority for Congress to involve itself in military operations. It’s the Commander-in-Chief’s duty to protect our national security. Our troops are under attack by another country. Pres. Bush has an obligation to protect them, too. It’s logical and it’s necessary. Iran is now a nation provoking war with us. Whether Congress likes it or not. Congress has the power of the purse, but the President is the Commander-in-Chief.
Imagine if the Democrats would put their heads together and actually help the President win in Iraq. And how about a little credit to our military men and women once in a while?
