Grant Burns, my old boss at the Thompson Library at UM-Flint and a great guy, died January 5th at age 58. Just found out yesterday in a meeting at work.
Here's what's posted at the Thompson Library
website, and here's a warm remembrance by the publisher of
New Pages, where Grant wrote a column as Uncle Frank.
There haven't been many older, heterosexual men in my life who I've respected so much. After I moved to Ann Arbor, was having serious troubles with my then partner Jay, and contemplated moving back to Flint, Grant's email response was basically, "No @#$%&* way." Whenever I'd stop back to visit, we'd always have a fine chat, commiserating about politics, cheering baseball (we took in one game together with his son, the last season Tiger Stadium was open), catching up on the latest. I'd always figured we'd be chatting or swapping emails for years to come.
