OMG!
Okay, it's all together (Jean, I took a pic of the innards just for you, I'll post it when I get a chance) and it took forever.
Had an issue with the stupid tower/case... and well...
So. I had an old computer. I got it as a Corporate Refurb about 6 years ago. At that time, the extent of my "gaming" was Yahoo!Games. I did a lot of web surfing & was Kingdom Chronicler at the time so did a lot of word processing. That computer was totally sufficient for my needs.
Fast forward to a couple of years ago... I was playing 2nd Life a bit. It ran on my desktop. Sort of... My honey was wonderful and I got a laptop that was swoopty enough to play my new game, plus do all of the other stuff that I had been doing all along.
That laptop was stolen, and I replaced it with something that wasn't _quite_ as swoopty, but was still more than sufficient for my needs.
Then. I started playing World of Warcraft a bit over a year ago.
My laptop has been running WoW, but not real well... Yeah, 7-15 frame rate. REALLY sucking.
What? You mean the animation is supposed to be SMOOTH?? Really?
Anyway, I finally decided I really just needed to update my computer again and start playing on the desktop.
So. What all this boils down to is... I figured I could just buy new inner bits and viola! Have a new desktop on the cheap. Right? Right?
Well... what I didn't realize/take into account was that my old system was a Dell.
Yeah. You know, one of the companies who are proprietary fuck-tards?
Yeaahhhhhh....
The new bits didn't FIT into the old case. The old case & half the cables were built so they ONLY work with a Dell motherboard.
Mutherfukk.
We both thought we had a couple other cases lying around from OOOOLLLDDDDD systems, but tear the house apart as we might, they didn't turn up.
Then, about 7:55pm last night, we decide to make a mad dash out about town to see if we could find one at a computer part store or a thrift store.
Dammit, I wanted to play on the swoopty-fast system! (Stupid Dell)
Needless to say, 5 stores later we had found no reasonably priced cases. (2 computer supply houses, Circuit City, Best Buy, & Savers. BB had cases... for $114!)
Crap. I'm tired, and frustrated. We get home and I give up and go to bed. (Stupid Dell)
This morning, we get up and I start calling around to other computer supply places. The first place I called... I say "I'm looking for a used computer case to fit an ATX motherboard. Just the case, I don't need the power supply. Do you have anything like that in stock?"
And the idjeet on the other end of the phone says "Um... I'm not sure. Is that the 9x9 motherboard?"
Wow. Ended up that while they had cases, they all had power supplies which pushed the price to $50+. This is TOO MUCH!!
Called a couple other places... most weren't willing to sell me just the empty case. (Du-mahs!) Or they didn't have any used ones.
Oy vay.
FINALLY got one place where the guy on the phone wasn't a moron and said "Oh! You don't want the power supply? I've got a couple lying around I'll sell you for $20."
SCORE! This is what I've been looking for! Yay!
We pile into the car and run down there. Get there and the guy says "Aw, just keep the power supply & fan & cd rom & floppy that are in there. Still $20..."
I think I'll shop there again. :-)
Got home & got all the parts in.
And, low and behold! My stupid Windows wasn't behaving... ended up having to completely reinstall Windows. Lame!
Got that done, and now I'm fighting with other software to get it the way I want it.
The moral of the story? I could have been doing all of this yesterday and playing my game all day today if it weren't for STUPID DELL!
