It's just sliding off of his bones... nothing mutilated about that. :P
There's a really good way too look at it... they did some excellent special effects for that scene. It almost looks real. Ok, so the realistic part is a wee bit icky, but it is impressive -- especially for a television show.

Oh yes, objectively I think "Wow, if they managed to scare me, they've done a good job with their CGI effects!" but outside I'm going "NOOOO!" ;)
